News and Events March 2010
 Headshot of Kathy SmithGreetings!

         CCC Book Club Reading List

Book Selection for March:  This month's book, One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd, is an intriguing story by author Jim Fergus.  The story revolves around a "Brides for Indians" program that took place in the United States during the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant.  Kelley F. recommended this selection and I'm sure we'll all follow her lead and have a lot to say about it.

Our Books are Available through Jimmie B. Keel Library in H'borough County:
We have an arrangement with the Jimmie B. Keel Library on Bearss Avenue, whereby our book selections can usually be borrowed by going to the checkout counter and asking for the selection under our club name, "CCC Monday #9."  The librarian at Keel collects multiple copies (hard/soft cover, and sometimes large print, or audiobook CDs) and sets them aside for us behind the counter; thus, you won't find the title out on the shelves at Jimmie B. Keel or other Hillsborough County Libraries.

REMINDER:
The library has undergone staff reductions lately; thus, you may need to seek out a staff person to obtain your copy, i.e., the books are behind the front counter, and not in the separate "hold" room that library patrons typically access themselves.

NOTE OF WELCOME:  We are delighted to have any and all book lovers join us on the 4th Monday nights at Carrollwood Cultural Center.  Ours is a diverse group:  We read a wide variety of books and welcome many points of view.  So...don't be shy about attending and piping up!

I look forward to seeing you all in a few short days, on Monday, March 22, 7:00 p.m., for our next discussion meeting.

This month's historical fiction novel is described on the B&N site as "the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians."

A 2006 National Book Award winner, Richard Powers' novel centers on a man who suffers a car accident, with life-threatening head injuries.  His resulting neurological disorders are diagnosed as Capgras Syndrome-the delusion that people in one's life are doubles or imposters.  Jedd P. recommended this selection for us.

Logistics Issues

In recent months the discussion meetings have been very well attended and our Reading Room upstairs has almost passed the point of coziness!  After ideas and discussions were brought up a couple of months ago, I did get in touch with our contact at the Center about options for change/expansion.  However, I believe most nights are equally busy, and the Annex/Studio is not an option for us either.  So for now, I hope we can stay on course and continue meeting on the 4th Monday nights.

The following facts describe some methods of improvement, nonetheless:  The Book Club Leader and/or I need to plan to arrive about 20 minutes ahead of time to make sure extra chairs are already set up and in place (about 6 - 8 extras, as many as will fit in the room comfortably).  Also, the students in the Computer/Photography lab next door have been reminded of an alternate path as they exit their room--thus minimizing or eliminating the need to tiptoe among us in the Reading Room.

I hope these smaller improvements will do the trick, because our meeting schedule is already "in print" in a number of places, and our dates/arrangements are already nailed down with the librarian at Keel.  Thanks for your continued patience and understanding.
Simon
Winchester and "The Man Who Loved China"

Since we've read two of Simon Winchester's books already, it caught my attention when I discovered some website information about a talk Winchester gave a few months ago at the New York Public Library.

The subject of the talk
is Joseph Needham, the main character of Winchester's recent book, The Man Who Loved China.

The presentation (available in both audio and video format) lasts about an hour, and once you begin, you'll be completely riveted.
