 DOWNTOWN FEATURED RECOGNITION

Sunseri Pizza

 Sunseri

Sunseri Pizza, A New Family Tradition is located in Verona at 749 Allegheny River Blvd.  The fresh, made from scratch pizzas, hoagies, calzones, strombolis, appetizers, salads, and specialty pizzas are a hit with area merchants and workers in the community as well as residents wanting a football snack, dinner, or something good to eat.

Sal and Jenna and three year old Isabella decided to open Sunseri Pizza in Verona because that is where they live.  They are grateful and thankful for the warm reception they have received since they opened.

The Verona Business District Advisory Committee is pleased to feature this popular business in our downtown.

To order pizza, or any other tasty treat on their menu, you may walk-in, call 412-794-8127 or seek them out on-line at www.SunseriPizza.com.

 PAINT VERONA

The "Paint Verona" project got its start in the summer of 2011, shortly after the formation of the Verona Economic Development Committee, an ad hoc Verona Chamber of Commerce committee designed to augment the ideals of economic revitalization  through a grant provided by Allegheny County's,  Allegheny Together Program.  Members include Kier Ewing, Jay Flynn, Bridget Seery, Michael Vento, Rhoda and Donald Worf.

Mike Vento approached the committee with a grant proposal sponsored by PPG and Home Depot for free paint.  Realizing the low chances of winning the grant, a more direct and immediate approach was needed.  With this thought in mind,  Rhoda Worf decided to seek local help and support for painting the facades of the businesses bordering both sides of Allegheny River Boulevard within Verona's core (and oldest) business district.  Mrs. Worf approached Chris Avalotis, owner of Verona based Avalotis Painting Company Inc. (www.avalotis.com/)  with her idea.  Mr. Avalotis immediately got behind the project, graciously supporting it by agreeing to provide free paint to paint the facades of any business located within the main business corridor.

Following the meeting with Mr. Avalotis, local merchants were contacted and made aware of the program.  Requirements were rather simple.  Building owners were given the paint and they agreed to provide the labor at their expense. In keeping with the parameters of Allegheny Together, paints were selected to comply with Historical Preservation palette.

On behalf of the Verona Chamber of Commerce, the participating local business owners and the citizens of Verona, the Verona Economic Development Committee would like to publically thank owner, Chris Avalotis of Avalotis Painting Company, Inc. for their total support and commitment for this project.

Request for proposals have gone out for a qualified firm to begin the Design and Engineering process of a streetscape project. This will be the first step in beginning streetscape improvements. Efforts are being made to create a plan to attract more outdoor types of businesses in order to utilize Verona's unique placement along the river and potential biking trails. Additionally, plans for a running event are in process for the spring of 2012.

OVER 50 MAIN STREET BUSINESSES EARN SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS DESIGNATION THROUGH SUSTAINABLE PITTSBURGH PROGRAM

In late 2010, Sustainable Pittsburgh, in partnership with Town Center Associates, launched the Sustainable Business Designation program to advance sustainable practices among small, local businesses around Allegheny and Beaver County's Main Streets. The program recognizes businesses for implementing sustainability actions that are simultaneously good for their bottom line, the environment, and the social fabric of their communities. To date, over fifty businesses have earned sustainable business designation through this program.

To create the program, Sustainable Pittsburgh developed a short checklist of sustainability criteria for businesses. These criteria include provisions related to energy conservation, waste reduction, stormwater management, land use policies, and alternative transportation, among other sustainability-related topics.

Sustainable Business Designation is reflected for each qualifying business in the business directory for their town, soon to be available at www.DowntownFirst.net, as well as through a certificate of acknowledgment and window display stickers. The designation helps customers identify and choose businesses that are committed to sustainability as a core principle to their operations and business model. Businesses can earn an additional, Local Business, designation in the directory as well.

The program is intended to inspire local, small businesses to apply sustainability practices and increase vitality among the region's rich fabric of small towns and neighborhoods. If you and your business are interested in signing up for the program, visit: www.downtownfirst.net/sustainable-businesses.

Sustainable Pittsburgh is proud of the businesses who have shown their leadership in earning sustainable designation, becoming stars in their communities. Click here to view a list of businesses that have earned the Sustainable Business Designation.

TRANSFORMING VACANCIES INTO OPPORTUNITIES...

STOREFRONT DESIGN

In a tough economy, the tough...decorate! As the economy continues to recover, small business owners need to look to low-cost, high-impact ways of increasing their business. One of the best assets a business has is its storefront windows. Think of your storefront windows as a 24/7 billboard for your business. Good storefront window displays catch the attention of passersby, draw in customers, and lead to more sales.

PHLF is here to help you make the most of your storefront windows through free consultations with a design professional. Our designers can help you create an eye-catching window display, improve the interior layout of your space, and offer suggestions for new paint colors or window treatments. This is a great opportunity for your business to get recommendations from a design professional, free of charge. To set up an appointment, please contact David Farkas at 412-471-5808.
