DOWNTOWN RECOGNITION AWARD

Jennifer Temple

The Beaver Business District Authority has chosen Jennifer Temple as its 1st Quarter Downtown Recognition recipient for 2011.  Jennifer is being recognized for her work as the "Storytime" lady.  Last July, she read her first story to a handful of young Beaver children at the Gazebo.  Since that time, the program has grown and is held at various locations downtown.

Beaver's Storytime Program is the brainchild of the Beaver Business District Authority and takes place twice a month.  In addition to listening to a well-told story, children also take part in an activity related to the story. If you are interested in becoming a part of this very popular event, please email jennifer15009@yahoo.com The Storytime event for this month is February 23 at 10 AM at Castle Toys and Games on Third Street.

BEAVER TALES - A STORYTELLING EVENT  Beaver Tales

In 2008, the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation received a generous gift from the Blanche E. Shaw Family.  The family suggested that the monies be used for "something new and unique, educational, fun and open to all ages".  After much discussion and brainstorming, it was decided that the fund be used to offer a storytelling event, the first of which was planned for September 2009. The result was a community festival with people of all ages participating.  International storytellers were brought in to make the moment "magical".  These talented storytellers gave their presentation at the schools, the library, the Museum, Log House and even the Beaver Cemetery. Other activities were interwoven into the storytelling such as crafts, food, live music, gift shop, and picnic.  It was a phenomenal success with the cost for this event totaling $9,300.

On September 24, Beaver Tales2010, the event was repeated, but with a slightly scaled down program.  Once again, the event was extremely popular with children and adults alike, with almost 1200 people participating EACH YEAR.

Obviously, the BAHF wants to continue this delightful program for future years.  However, the original gift from the Blanche Shaw Fund is running low and the Foundation needs your help to keep the program going. The biggest expense involves the cost of the tellers, their fees, transportation, housing and meals. Please help us continue to offer this free and wholesome entertainment to our families.

Donations are greatly appreciated.  Please contact Shirley Pow, chairperson of Beaver Tales, at 724-774-1505 or powshirley@aol.com to see how you can help.
