TARENTUM RECEIVES GRANT AWARDS

TOTALING $184K in JANUARY!

January was a good month for Tarentum. Bill Rossey, the Borough Manager, received word that Tarentum had been awarded $184,000 in three separate grants, thanks to the borough's aggressive revitalization efforts.

Business owners and residents alike have, for decades, protested the unsightly jersey barriers that were erected as a temporary measure to replace aging railings along East Sixth Avenue decades ago.

Bill Rossey and the Tarentum Business Area Advisory Committee, made the project a top priority and considered it a cornerstone in their campaign to revitalize the borough central commerce core as it is a high-profile gateway into Tarentum.

The $100,000 grant, awarded by the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County (RAAC) Board with the help of ACED, will be used to remove the barriers that run from the Tarentum Bridge to Lock Street, add decorative aluminum railings, sidewalks and landscaping, as well as reconfigure the challenging intersection at Lock and Sixth.

Additionally, the borough received two additional grants of $84,000, both from  the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and administered by ACED.

$60,000 will be used to create a streetscape design that will incorporate new store facades, landscaping and street lighting. Rossey believes that some of the money will be available to do actual landscape improvements.

$24,000 will be used to create handicapped-access ramps at 24 street corners from Riverview Park to East Sixth Avenue.

"It's nice to see that years of hard work and planning are starting to pay off in ways that will showcase the tremendous-and improving-assets that we have here in Tarentum," says Rossey.

DOWNTOWN RECOGNITION AWARD

Carl Garrett & Son

A Steady Presence In Tarentum's Business District Since 1960

Much has changed in Tarentum in the last 50 years but a constant in the borough's retail sector has been the presence of Carl Garrett & Son, Inc. which opened its doors on January 1, 1960, thanks to the efforts of founders Carl Garrett, his wife, Garnet, and their son, Don.

More than five decades later, the Fifth Avenue building situated near the railroad tracks is still home to the 12-employee heating, air conditioning and plumbing contractor.

Today, the company is operated by Don Garrett and his son, Skip, and Mike Thimons, with quality and service as their number one priority.

Each day, a fleet of Carl Garrett & Son service vehicles travel within a 25 mile radius to service residential customers, who appreciate the company's attention to exceptional customer service and care.

"We at Carl Garrett & Son Inc. would like to thank our customers and employees for making 50 years in business possible."

The Tarentum Business Area Advisory Commitee is pleased to recognize Carl & Son as their 1st quarter Downtown Recognition Recipient.  On behalf of Tarentum Borough, we'd like to congratulate Carl Garrett & Son for their ongoing success, longevity and commitment to quality customer care. carl

SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS FOR DOWNTOWN TARENTUM

Recently, Sustainable Pittsburgh sponsored a team from the Michael Baker Corporation to participate in a problem-solving exercise with the Tarentum Business District Advisory Committee (BAAC). Sustainable Pittsburgh is a nonprofit organization that seeks to integrate economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental quality to bring sustainable solutions to communities and businesses.

The problem discussed was how to strengthen the connection between the main and secondary business districts and how to create an expansive riverfront park. Discussion also ensued to generate ideas on overcoming the two main streets that are bisected by an active railroad line.

The discussion with the Tarentum BAAC committee focused on the 5th and 6th Avenue corridors. It was agreed that current plans to remove the jersey barriers will provide immediate, tangible improvement to the effort. Other probable projects discussed included exploration of PennDot funding for streetscape lighting; crosswalk initiatives; the possible widening of 5th Avenue; and the idea of creating urban gardens as an attractive solution to vacant properties.

The Tarentum BAAC will consider the information discussed during this exercise, and work with Town Center Associates to incorporate key elements of the discussion into our annual Strategic Action Plan. Tarentum's Strategic Action Plan focuses on bringing about positive revitalization within Tarentum's central business district.

PHLF UPDATE

Great businesses capture foot traffic, maintain their building's historical integrity, and are intensely focused on customer service. PHLF is offering technical assistance to business owners to help them make their businesses the best they can be.

As many property owners are aware, Allegheny County's Allegheny Restores program is a way for you to make capital improvements to the façade of your building. However, this is not the only assistance available to you. PHLF is offering the services of an interior designer to you and your business. Our designers can help you draw in more foot traffic through an eye-catching window display, improve the interior layout of your space, and offer suggestions for new paint colors or window treatments. This is a great opportunity for your business to get recommendations from a design professional, free of charge. To set up an appointment, please contact David Farkas at 412-471-5808.

As previously mentioned, Allegheny Restores is a great opportunity for property and business owners in the Allegheny Together communities to make improvements to their facades. PHLF will be stepping up its role in this area and assisting property and business owners in bidding the work out to subcontractors, as well as helping to advise about the construction phase. PHLF brings over 40 years of restoration and renovation experience, and we are excited about working with interested business and property owners.

YOUR CENSUS FORM IS GOOD FOR YOUR COMMUNITY

Simply filling out your census form can benefit our downtown and our entire community by making it known what resources are needed for our community.

Accurate data reflecting changes in the community are critical in apportioning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and deciding how more than $400 billion per year is allocated for infrastructure projects.

That's more than $4 trillion over a 10-year period for things like public works projects and services like job training centers.

Additionally, residents themselves have used census data to support community initiatives involving environmental legislation, quality-of-life issues and consumer advocacy.

Do your part for your downtown efforts and your community as a whole by filling out and sending in your 2010 Census Form.

Information garnered from the US Census website at www.2010.census.gov.
