bekavacDowntown Recognition Award
 
Bekavac Funeral Home has been chosen as the third quarter 2009 Recognition recipient by the Elizabeth Business District Advisory Committee.  Located at 221 Second Street, the business was founded in 1972 by Paul Bekavac and taken over by son Tony in 2004. 
 
In addition to enjoying a long business history of 37 years, Bekavac Funeral Home is also very community-minded. Tony has contributed to the update of the War Memorial so that the names are complete and current.  He also donates to community events such as the Halloween Parade and shows support for our downtown revitalization efforts.
 
The Committee thanks Bekavac Funeral Home for its commitment and generosity to Elizabeth and extends congratulations on this well-deserved honor.
Congratulations to the Loyal Order of Moose!

Moose

 
This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Loyal Order of Moose # 142 in Elizabeth.  It has been a central part of this community since its inception, working to support various local charities within the area. However, it is part of a much larger international organization of men and women dedicated to caring for the young and old.
 
Along with other units of Moose International, the Loyal order of Moose supports the operation of Mooseheart Child City & School, a 1,000-acre community for children and teens in need, located 40 miles west of Chicago; and Moosehaven, a 63-acre retirement community for its members near Jacksonville, FL. Additionally, Moose Lodges conduct approximately $50 million worth of community service (counting monetary donations and volunteer hours worked annually).
 
The Elizabeth Moose is located at 2nd and Market Streets in a vintage Second Empire building that has seen a variety of changes to its exterior over the years.  Efforts are now underway to explore returning the Market Street facade to its former glory.
 
A community celebration is planned for the weekend of September 25-27 so that everyone can share in the festivities. 
 
There will be entertainment, prizes, 50/50 raffle and much more.

Sponsored by the Monessen Amateur Radio Club (MARC), the MVC was originally mapped in the late 1940's and has remained essentially the same since then.  It consists of four different levels: 100 miles, 70 miles, 50 miles and 30 miles.  The tour began in Elizabeth with registration at 6 AM.  The route was composed of equal portions of hilly, rolling and flat terrain and was marked with arrows. A lunch stop was included with extra snacks provided for the 70 and 100-mile riders. MVC T-shirts were available for $8. 
 
Congratulations to all those who participated in this annual bike tour, especially with all the heat and humidity! Participation was up 25% this year.

PHLF UPDATE 
 

The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation (PHLF) has been pleased to be able to help Elizabeth's downtown revitalization effort through several special projects that the Business District Advisory Committee (BDAC) has identified as a high priority.

The first of these is exploring with the leaders of the Moose Club ways to go about restoring the Moose building, which is on the corner of 3rd Ave. and Market St. The exterior of the building has been dramatically altered from its original appearance, though most of the original is still intact underneath. PHLF has gone through the building and helped draw up a rough construction estimate.  We are also working on a rendering that will depict what a restored building will look like.  Our next step after this will be to work with the Moose Club and the Elizabeth BDAC on a fundraising plan to see if we can begin to cover the renovation costs.

We are also helping folks in Elizabeth understand the pros and cons of having the downtown and possibly portions of the residential area designated as a National Historic District.  We set up a meeting with Bill Callahan from the PA Historical and Museum Commission to speak with members of the Elizabeth Area CDC about this in late July and PHLF and Mr. Callahan will attend the August meeting of the Elizabeth Borough Council to have a similar conversation with them about the implications of a historic district.

Downtown Façade Restoration Assistance
 
The Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County (RAAC) is offering assistance to business owners and building owners who wish to make physical improvements to their building façades through the Allegheny Restores Program.
 
The following criteria will be used to determine whether an applicant is eligible for a façade renovation grant.

  • LOCATION: Businesses must be located in an Allegheny Together community that is in year two or beyond of the program. Projects located within the core business district boundary will be given priority. 
  • TYPE OF BUSINESS: Eligible businesses include commercial establishments with street-level storefront entrances. Note: Preference is given to structures fifty years old or older.
  • OCCUPANCY:  Unoccupied buildings are eligible, but buildings currently occupied by eligible businesses will be given priority.  Owner occupancy is not required; approval of tenant-initiated projects is contingent on the property owner's agreement to adhere to program requirements.

Eligible Activities Include:


1. Architectural Services
2. Improvements to the Façade of an Existing Building Examples include:
-Repointing and cleaning brick
-Painting walls and trim
-Repairing or replacing woodwork or other decorative architectural elements
-Installing canvas awnings
-Fabrication and installation of signage
-Installation of exterior lighting
-Restoring or rehabilitating an existing storefront
-Removing incompatible or historically inappropriate exterior finishes
-Replacing or repairing windows and doors
3. Construction of the Façade of a New Building, where the design of the façade is compatible with existing architecture in the business district.
4. Roof repair is not eligible for this program.  

The next round of applications is due by September 25, 2009.
