Downtown Recognition Award Weleski Celebrates 100 Years in Business Weleski Enterprises' presence in Tarentum dates back to the turn of the twentieth century when entrepreneur Andrew L. Weleski launched a hauling company from the dining room of his First Avenue home. 100 years later, his grandson Gary sits at the helm of the family owned and operated venture that today includes self storage facilities, river terminals, a truck repair facility, a convenience store, three Subway franchises and a successful travel agency. Gary credits his father, Tony, who passed away in September of 2007, for setting the stage for the company's evolution from a local hauling business into a leading long distance moving company by recognizing the opportunities in that industry and capitalizing on them. While the company's diversification into other markets is impressive, the moving business still reigns supreme for the 225-employee company, just as it has in the four generations since the company's birth. Today, Weleski has offices in Cleveland and Johnstown and is one of the largest of the 400 agents affiliated with Atlas Van Lines and has grown from a major player in the A-K Valley to a well-known commodity in the industry nationwide. Prominent customers include the Pittsburgh Steelers, PNC Bank, Mellon Bank and Ernst & Young who rely on the Weleski's long distance and commercial relocation expertise to help key personnel transition to new geographic locales. What has propelled the company's rise in the industry is the steady leadership of the Weleski family, four generations of it. Gary has worked with his cousin Lynn Thompson, the company's Vice President, since the 1970s and both have been joined by their own children, Lauren and Dan, respectively. For over a century, Weleski has been branching out into new market segments and geographic terrain but the company's long and noteworthy heritage remains firmly rooted in Tarentum. |

 Farmer's Market
The Tarentum Business Area Advisory Committee has arranged for the Farmer's Market to visit our downtown during the 2009 (June to October) growing season. This year's market will feature at least five vendors and take place on Mondays from 9 AM to 1 PM at J.G.'s Tarentum Station Grille parking lot.
It is extremely important that our merchants, their employees and our residents support this initiative. Be sure to encourage everyone to take advantage of this service to ensure that this event is an outstanding success.

PHLF UPDATE
Landmarks Community Capital Corporation (LCCC), a nonprofit subsidiary of PHLF, announced in February the start of The Metropolitan Loan Fund of Pittsburgh (MLFP). The program was created in collaboration with Allegheny County, the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, Neighborhood Business Inc., Bridgeway Capital, with the support of The Heinz Endowments to help bring much needed capital investment into our smaller business districts. The MLFP has $1.75 million in funds committed to spur small and minority business opportunities in the Pittsburgh region, and is particularly well suited to traditional main street businesses. Funds are available for an array of uses, including building acquisition and improvements, equipment purchases and operating. This program demonstrates County Executive Dan Onorato's commitment to small business in Allegheny County and in partnership with State Senator Wayne Fontana, who helped make these funds available to the County, is anxious to get the program started. "The (fund) will benefit our region on two levels - by increasing the number of minority-owned businesses and by encouraging additional economic development," said Onorato. "This public/private partnership," said Dr. Howard Slaughter, Jr., CEO of LCCC, "is designed to provide flexible financing and technical assistance to new and existing businesses, with special emphasis on minority and women-owned businesses in the region." A key component of the program is for participants to utilize technical assistance from the beginning of the process throughout the entire life of the loan, "in order to help these firms navigate the vicissitudes of entrepreneurship," Howard added. Eligible applicants include new or existing businesses located in or serving the Pittsburgh metropolitan statistical area.
