AT A GLANCE...
MONTHLY INSIGHT: PERSPECTIVE

Gayle Hardie, a consultant, coach, Senior Member of the Enneagram in Business Network (EIBN) from Australia, writes about Perspective for her monthly insight.

Perspective Gayle's Insights about Perspective
If we imagine a room with glass walls and we are standing on the outside of one of them looking in, what do we see? We see the room from our perspective, of course. Yet, it is not the only one. Wherever we stand, we gain another glimpse of what is in the room - the back of a head from one view becomes the face of a person from another. The front of the room becomes the back depending on where we are positioned.

It appears that we are able to both understand and hold this physical perspective quite easily.

However, when it comes to listening to and accepting many points of view or different aspects of a problem or situation, it becomes more difficult. What gets in the way of holding multiple perspectives in this example? What prevents us from seeing both/and rather than either/or? What keeps us holding a view that feels safest, is most correct, is factual, is justifiable, is easiest, is less harmful, is better for others, is unique or is the best one right now?

As we gain understanding of our own "lens" on the world through the Enneagram and how it can hold us back from holding multiple perspectives, the world of "both/and" becomes so much more accessible and we can "see" very different opportunities, pathways and solutions as a result.

Gayle always writes fascinating Insights, ones that create a (good) challenge from which I try to write blogs that do her ideas justice. In this blog, I take the metaphor of the "lens" to suggest ways in which the different Enneagram may need to recalibrate their way of looking at the world. Click here to read this blog.

Tribute to Steve Jobs
Apple

It is really hard to imagine our world at work and home without Steve Jobs in it, and I only hope he realized in his lifetime the enormous contribution he has made everywhere.

My very first big external consulting job after I left my internal OD position at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California was with Apple in 1987. Going from institutional consulting at Kaiser - Kaiser is and was an old company - to the loosely structured, highly creative and semi-organized college campus atmosphere known as Apple was an amazing experience. And Apple made it very clear that I had to be Mac-based or they would not hire me as an outside consultant! In those days, Macs and PCs had trouble sending documents back and forth, but I learned and have been Mac-based ever since.

I worked at Apple for several years until they decided it was time for Jobs to leave and they brought in a "professional" leader from a Fortune 100 company. During his first month, he eliminated everything, including all consultants (though I was in the midst of doing a really innovative Future Search OD project there), and that was that. Several years later, after the "professional" leader ran the culture and innovation into the ground, they brought Jobs back and the rest is history.

As I watched him over the years, I was extraordinarily impressed in many ways. First, it was really never all about Steve Jobs. It was always about the products and what they could do for people. He was a master of that, an innovator who could make his ideas (and assuredly those of others) manifest in concrete ways. He seemed to have his ego under his own self-management. The second way he impressed me was how he distributed Mac-based products, specifically his donations of Macs to so many school systems and the ways in which he created affordable Macs so that college students could buy them. Smart marketing, yes! Establishing computer literacy and brand loyalty in the next generations, yes! But making resources available and changing the world of information sharing in the process, revolutionary!

Even I (low techno-savvy person) can use Mac products. Thank you, Steve Jobs! May Apple continue to thrive based on all you have created.
