Greetings!
I haven't written a letter to Santa in ages - he probably won't even recognize my name! But here's what I'm sending him this year.
Dear Santa, How has 2009 treated you? I've been reasonably good this year and very blessed. But there are still a few things outstanding on my Christmas list, some things I really want.
First, I'd like a nail. It should be small enough to carry in my pocket, but large enough to hold up a wall. I'd like it to be made of the strongest steel you can find, something that won't rust and is shiny so it's easy to find in the dark.
Speaking of the dark, I'd also like a candle. I know they come in many shapes and sizes, colors and scents. Those details don't matter. But this candle must have a very long wick to burn for hours and hours.
Next I'd like a flower seed and a huge pot to plant it in. That way, when the seed grows, it will have plenty of room and will produce beautiful flowers.
Now this is really gonna surprise you, Santa. Could you also bring me a lump of coal? Not because I've been bad, but because coal burns slowly, giving off a soothing, lasting warmth.
Finally, I'd like a feather, and not just any feather. Mine should be white and soft and large to be seen from a distance.
By this time, Santa, I'm sure you're wondering what I plan to do with these odd gifts. Well, just like I believe in you, I believe each of these has a special power. The nail represents courage. When it seems as though the walls of the world are crashing down, that nail will hold them up, just as courage does. The candle represents knowledge. With the candle of knowledge lighting the world, fear and hatred and misunderstanding have nowhere to hide.
The seed represents hope. All it needs to produce beautiful flowers is water and light and air. Isn't it funny how the simplest things often provide the greatest rewards? And isn't that what hope really is?
The lump of coal represents love. The love of one human being for another warms the heart and soul just like a glowing ember warms the hands. Finally, the feather represents peace. The feather from a dove of peace is soft and pure and without malice. A world at peace would be no less.
We all need more courage, knowledge, hope, love and peace, so Santa, you can count on me to share my gifts with everyone I meet in 2010. Together, we can make magic happen.

Sincerely,
Judy Pearson
