Greetings!

On March 3, 2011, as a natural extension of Quivira's work to inspire people to act on behalf of the environment, they are bringing 6 films from the Wild & Scenic Film Festival to Santa Fe. Complete details are HEREand the featured films are listed listed below. I'm happy to be an official supporter of this effort.  It's also a great excuse for a trip to Santa Fe!  Maybe huevos rancheros at Tia Sophia's, and a few hours browsing the great books at Collected Works BookstorePlease scroll down to learn more about the Quivira Coalition.

Featured Films (approximately 2 hours total):

The Greenhorns

Wild & Scenic Greenhorns

Quivira will showcase the final, full length version. A documentary film that explores the lives of America's young farming community - its spirit, practices, and needs. It is the filmmaker's hope that by broadcasting the stories and voices of these young farmers, they can build the case for those considering a career in agriculture - to embolden them, to entice them, and to recruit them into farming. The Best Country
The Best Country

Two longtime Wallowa Valley, Oregon ranching families tell their stories about taking dramatic steps to restore salmon and steelhead habitat on their land. A deep respect for the land, passed on from generations before them, and a strong desire to do right by the land and pass it on to their children in a way that increases their ability to "make it on the ranch," drive the Nichols and McDaniel families to put the curves back in the Wallowa River and encourage the salmon and steelhead to come home. Open Space
Open Space Wild & ScenicProduced for Sonoran Institute, Open Space examines the loss of one of the West's most valuable assets, open space, which serves as a community's agricultural base and wildlife habitat. The film offers a new vision for communities and landscapes in the American West. View YouTube video.

The Fishman
Wild and Scenic fish man

Mike Kasic swims the Yellowstone River like a human-fish through swift river canyons and scenic mountain views, watching trout in fast currents filled with frothing water tornadoes, stopping only to body surf river waves. His message is simple: a river is more than its water; what lies beneath is a wilderness that is often overlooked, but critical for the Yellowstone ecosystem to thrive.

Willem and the Whales

Wild and Scenic whales

Willem is 5 years old and has a lot on his mind! Take a quick journey through the eyes of a child as Willem explains why people should stop whaling. New Media Award, Blue Ocean FF.  View YouTube video.

Animals Save the Planet - Supermarket Bags

A humorous, animated, short film where animals give us humans tips on how to live an eco-friendly lifestyle. Produced for Animal Planet by Academy Award-winning studio, Aardman Animations (Wallace & Gromit; Chicken Run).

These films were chosen for their fun and entertaining upbeat messages related to the Quivira Coalition's mission: ...to build resilience by fostering ecological, economic and social health on western landscapes through education, collaboration, and progressive public and private land stewardship. I am pleased to be an official Quivira supporter of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival.

What is the Quivira Coalition?  In 1997, when the range wars were flaring between cattlemen and environmentalists, a rancher and two conservationists got together and formed the Quivira Coalition.  They named the organization Quivira, a Spanish word depicting unknown territory.  They started literally at the 'grass' and the 'roots," building bridges based on their passion for the land and a common belief that what's good for wildlife is also good for growing beef.  Now Quivira's annual conferences draw 500 people from all walks of life - from hippies in Birkenstocks, to government range cons in uniform, to ranchers in silver belly hats, to Montessori teachers with students in tow, to impressive keynote speakers like Wendell Berry and Richard Louv.  These people come from the Radical Center - a neutral place where exploring ideas is more important than arguing opinions.
