  Sojourn

  Into the heart of writing

  Saturday, November 20, 2010

Mt. Vernon Country Club, Golden, Colorado

A one-day exploration into the art of writing in living color...

Writing Life - Sojourns

Greetings!

In 2008, the editors of Sojourns (a publication of the Peaks, Plateaus and Canyons Association) asked me to write an article recreating the experience of one of my river writing workshops.   Several months later, when I received my contributor's copy of Journal.Memory.Land, the beauty of what editors Pam Frazier and Carol Haralson had produced overwhelmed me.  I immediately ordered 10 copies.  I've been wanting to share this issue of Sojourns with you ever since.

Please join me for a one-day sojourn into the sensuous nature of art, writing, and food.  Weather permitting, following the seminar we'll sojourn outside to explore nature on one of Mt. Vernon's private hiking trails.  Complete details below.  In living color.

Deborah Durban's journal-making tools

 Our bodies interpret our lives.

     Sights.

         Sounds.

              Smells.

                  Tastes.

                       Touches.

But what our bodies know to be true isn't always reflected in our writing.

What can we learn from those who portray the sensate world in living color with words or paint or music?

Deborah Durban's journal-making tools as featured in Sojourns.

Sojourns

Each participant will receive a copy of Sojourns to refer to during our one-day seminar, and to take home and immerse yourselves in afterwards.   Look inside.

During the seminar, we will  explore the sensuous essays and art featured in the magazine (works by Craig Childs, Scott Thybony, Hal Cannon, Stephen Trimble, Tom Till, Deborah Durban, Raechel Running, Elena Miras Garcia, Jocelyn Cooley, Jerry Jacka, Mary Jardine, Gary Stroutsos, Peter Hassrick, Kanin Routson, Larry Lindahl, Tony Foster, and Patiann Rogers.)

We'll discover new ways to sensualize our fiction, memoir, and poetry.  We'll do writing prompts generated from my essay "Writing Life" (see above) and generate the seeds of new writing.

Spinning Like Rumi:

Writing Coach Confessions about an Unsettled Life

When our bodies and minds are in motion, writing can be difficult ... but not for the famous 13th century Sufi poet Rumi, who wrote thousands of poems while dancing.  A scribe followed on his spinning heels and transcribed them on parchment. Imagine!  Your own scribe!  READ MORE
