HOW WILD IS YOUR CREATIVE LANDSCAPE?

PLEASE JOIN ME for a day of conversation about nature and the wild side of creativity.  The spring SWEETGRASS SEMINAR SERIES at Mt. Vernon Country Club, just 20 minutes west of Denver, begins March 13th, less than 2 weeks away!  Come for a SINGLE DAY, or attend the entire series.

Whether you're a writer, an artist, or an entrepreneur, a deeper connection with nature will set you on a more meaningful path.  If you're a naturalist, already attuned to the natural world, a day immersed in a creative dialogue about the nature of animals and the nature of human beings, will re-awaken your own creativity.  If you're a writer, rediscovering your wild roots will free your work from the boring confines of convention.

Here are some of the creative questions we'll explore together on March 13th...

What does it mean to BE WILD?    What does it mean to WRITE WILD?

How can a deeper connection to nature re-awaken our creativity?  How can we find the wild roots beneath the surface of our domesticated lives? Are humans a part of the natural world, or separate from it?  What experiences have YOU had with animals that opened you up in a new way?

Animal Dialogues
On Saturday, March 13th, we'll gather at Mt. Vernon Country Club overlooking beautiful Clear Creek Canyon and spend the morning exploring these questions.
We'll write fun, spontaneous "responses" to excerpts from Craig Child's book THE ANIMAL DIALOGUES.  We'll talk about the value of "retreating" from civilization, facing our fears about being alone in nature, and writing from the wild, chaotic heart of our natural mind.   I'll share journaling excerpts written during the month I spent alone in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming in a secluded cabin on the edge of the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area.

Sweetwater Cabin"
I guess there's been some bear trouble on the west slope," the woman who dropped me off at the cabin warned.  "Keep your trash sealed up tight.  And Fish and Game has increased the hunting quota on mountain lions in this area.  There's way too many.  Keep an eye out.  I'll see you in a month."  And then she was gone, and I was alone - no phone, no internet, no Blackberry, nothing but thousands of miles of wilderness, six blank journals, and a small, trickling spring of fresh water.

Our day together at Mt. Vernon won't be quite so austere!  We'll enjoy a delicious catered lunch and then, in the afternoon, we'll break up into small discussion groups and share short excerpts from our own "nature-based" writing.  We'll explore Nature as both character and setting in memoir and novel writing.  We'll share a few of our favorite nature poems and use them as prompts for short writing exercises.  And, weather permitting, we'll get outdoors and enjoy a moderate hike  on Mt. Vernon's private hiking trails.
