December 2011

What a year 2011 has been!

Reflecting back on 2011, we've come so far since the merger between Summit Cancer Solutions and the CPRA Foundation to form the Cancer Fitness Institute last January!  We could not have done this without you - your support helps us make an impact. Some highlights from the year:

We held four training courses in 2011 and trained 54 new exercise professionals in our methods.

We opened CancerFit programs in 3 new sites, with our most recent additions of Gundersen Cancer Center on the campus of Winona State University in Minnesota this summer, Louisville (CO) Recreation this September, and Fruita (CO) Recreation this month.

Northglenn (CO) Recreation is planning a January 2012 opening, Durango (CO) Recreation anticipates their opening in spring, and Rifle (CO) Recreation expects to open their program in early summer.

We now have 13 sites open across Colorado (and Minnesota).

We raised $3,500 at Step Up for Cancer last August.

Cancer Fit was featured on CBS4!   Watch the video!

We gave out almost $13,000 in scholarships to low income cancer survivors who would otherwise not have been able to participate in our program.

We participated as a charity partner in the Colfax Marathon.

We successfully trademarked the CancerFit and Cancer Fitness Institute names so that we can advertise across the US.

We joined with 19 other Colorado cancer support services nonprofits to form the Network of Cancer Support Services (more info coming soon).  Through this Network, we plan to form a stronger safety net in Colorado for cancer survivors and the services they need to support them.

We trained three master trainers and now have a cadre of four master trainers to help us offer our turn-key training program.

Upcoming Trainings...
Our first 2012 training workshop will be in Boulder, CO, February 16-17.  We are also planning a training workshop in Keystone, CO in early October and two out of state workshops.  If you are interested in attending the Boulder workshop, please Click Here!

Colorado Gives Day is Today!

On December 6, 2011, Coloradans will be participating in Colorado Gives Day.  The purpose of this day is to support the nonprofits that nurture and protect our quality of life in Colorado.  We hope that you will continue to support us in providing life changing exercise programs for cancer survivors! We especially need help to continue providing scholarships to cancer survivors who do not have breast cancer. 100% of your donation will go to the Cancer Fitness Institute.   DONATE NOW!

Summit Cancer Solutions is now the Cancer Fitness Institute.

In January 2011, Summit Cancer Solutions merged with the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association Foundation (CPRA) and changed its name to the Cancer Fitness Institute (CFI). CPRA is a nonprofit professional association of 1,500 recreation professionals and over 200 municipal recreation centers in Colorado and is the state affiliate of the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).  This really is the story of two organizations coming together for all the right reasons - the biggest reason is our ongoing commitment to provide quality exercise programming to cancer survivors across Colorado.  Together, CPRA and the Cancer Fitness Institute are bringing the CancerFit (formerly Summit Cancer) exercise program to recreation centers and cancer survivors across Colorado, potentially serving thousands of cancer survivors each year.

Fourteen recreation centers currently offer the CancerFit (formerly Summit Cancer) exercise program to cancer survivors based on the training that CFI provides.  Find a location near you!
