The importance of remaining current, with updated professional knowledge and skills, is paramount to the delivery of safe, efficient, and effective therapeutic recreation services to consumers. The Board of the Colorado Therapeutic Recreation Society is committed to assisting professionals in meeting their professional development needs and recently completed a survey to ascertain training interests. Twenty-two individuals responded to the online questionnaire and the results are summarized below.
10 Highest Rated Topics for Professional Development
Average Topic

3.15 Personal development: how to negotiate
3.09 Developing partnerships and collaborations
3.05 Programming: aquatic therapy
3.05 Personal development: stress management
3.00 Programming: outdoor recreation
2.91 Volunteer program/management
2.91 Personal development: enhancing your marketability

2.86 Programming: animal-assisted therapy
The majority of respondents preferred short program sessions, ranging from one to two hours (45.5%), with three-hour and half-day sessions equally following in preference (36.4%). The most important factor influencing attendance at the CPRA conference was pertinent sessions (70%), followed by affordability (55.6%), and pertinent sessions offered on one/two days (53.3%).
The data, while limited in representation, will help the CTRS Board plan the Spring Workshop, annual conference, and grand rounds offered throughout the year. The Colorado Therapeutic Recreation Society is committed to ensuring professionals have opportunities for growth and development and welcomes your continued input (contact Jane Broida, Vice President, broidaj@mscd.edu). |
Exploring the Arts!
By: Kara Wright, TR Intern
Denver Parks & Recreation Special Needs Program
In my own life my passion for making and appreciating art of all types has helped me express myself in many ways. As an intern with the Denver Parks & Recreation Special Needs Program I decided to combine my own artistic passion with a desire to provide an opportunity for our participants to explore their creativity.
This season we will be holding a new program, "Exploring the Arts", which will allow participants to experiment with different mediums each week. We will explore a variety of projects; pinhole photography, paper mache, acrylic painting and ceramics.
I also feel that a valuable part of the art process is sharing it with others. To provide this opportunity for our participants, endowing them with a sense of pride, we will be holding an Art Show to conclude the class. Allowing them to share with family, friends and the public what they have created.
Please join us on the evening of April 9th from 6 to 8 pm for the first annual Exploring the Arts Gallery Showing, sponsored by the Special Needs Program. Come celebrate our participants and all they have accompished this session. The Art Show will be held at Washington Park Recreation Center in Denver. Please call Kara Wright at 720-865-0820 for more information. We look forward to seeing you at our event!

Paralympics Fill Olympic Withdrawals
by: Robin Lofton

Suffering from Olympic withdrawals? Why not watch the Paralympics (also officially known as the X Paralympic Winter Games)? The 2010 Winter Paralympics will be celebrated in Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia between March 12-21, 2010. The Opening Ceremony will take place in BC Place Stadium, Vancouver, British Columbia. 2010 will be the second time Canada has hosted the Paralympic Games, following the 1976 Summer Paralympics in Toronto. Paralympic Sport TV (paralympicsport.tv) which is the Internet TV Channel of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) will offer international free online live and recorded coverage of the games, everyday from 9:00 to 22:30 PST.
There will be five sports on the 2010 winter games program: Alpine skiing, Biathlon, Cross-country skiing, Wheel chair curling, and Sledge hockey competing from thirty-three participating nations. Each sport has physical disability groups: Amputee/Dwarfism/Other, Blind/Visually Impaired, Spinal Cord Injury/Paralyzed/Wheelchair-User, and Traumatic Brain Injury/CP/Stroke.
A subdivision of the Paralympics games is the Paralympic Experience. This program introduces individuals with physical disabilities (ages 14-19) to Paralympic sport on the local and international levels. The goal of the program is to show individuals with physical disabilities how participation in sports and living a healthy, active lifestyle can have a profoundly positive impact on their lives. Sound familiar? Paralympic Sport Clubs, located in more than 100 communities (16 located here in Colorado) across the US, annually host a one-day Paralympic Experience event that exposes local participants to a variety of Paralympic sport opportunities available in the community. To find a Paralympic Experience in your community, visit the Paralympic Activity Network.
The introduction of the mascot, Sumi, an angel guardian spirit with the wings of the Thunderbird and legs of a black bear, is the first time the Olympic and Paralympic mascots were introduced at the same time. To commemorate the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, seventeen new Canadian coins are being issued for general circulation. Two of the circulation coins will honor Paralympic sports. The two sports being featured include wheelchair curling (released on July 11, 2007) and ice sledge hockey (to be released on March 18, 2010).
The Paralympics is making huge strides in the magnitude and aftershock of the Olympics in terms of athletes, support staff, media coverage, and financial incentives (both direct and indirect for athletes). They are honoring tradition - cross country events have been a part of the Paralympic Winter Games since the sport was first introduced at the Ornskjoldsvik (Sweden) Games in 1976, as well as honoring modern sports - wheelchair curling made its debut at the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games in Torino as a medal event. The Paralympics themselves are a fitting way to end the Olympic cycle with the triumph of the human spirit, evident in every one of the participants of the Winter Games - both Games. |
