Indiana State Capital Legislative Update

Regular readers of NAMI Indiana State Essentials will recall coverage of NAMI Indiana's 7th Legislative Meet & Greet event which took place in the rotunda of the State House on January 13, 2009.

NAMI members from across the state participated in the event which included scheduling personal appointments with legislators to discuss issues and legislation of interest to persons affected by mental illness, personally greeting legislators as they entered and exited the building and presenting them with educational information on the topic of mental illness and public policy.

Governmental policy issues have tremendous impact on the lives of individuals affected by mental illness. NAMI Indiana and local NAMI affiliates, working in conjunction with governmental partners such as the Indiana Department of Mental Health and Addictions and advocacy partners such as Mental Health America of Greater Indianapolis work to make sure that our legislators have the educational resources to understand the sometimes complex issue of mental illness so they can sponsor and pass appropriate legislation when needed.

This legislative session was driven primarily by economic issues, so our primary legislative objective, elimination of death penalty for persons with mental illness, did not reach the floor. However, NAMI and all of its partners will be back next session to promote the interest of Hoosiers affected by mental illness during the next session.

If you would like to participate in upcoming NAMI Indiana public policy activities, please contact NAMI Indiana Executive Director Pamela McConey at pmcconey@nami.org.

Greetings!
If you are a caretaker of a child or children who exhibit signs of behavioral issues, or you know someone who is, you will probably be interested to know that today is declared National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

This awareness day has been established to promote positive youth development, resilience, recovery, and the transformation of mental health services delivery for children and youth with serious mental health needs and their families.

NAMI Indiana also recognizes the critical importance of providing education, advocacy and support to caregivers of children exhibiting signs of behavioral issues. Read below to learn about NAMI's newest signature program to help address these needs.

Basics is the new signature education program for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents living with mental illness. Development of this program was based on the success of other NAMI signature programs for consumers and families available across the country. NAMI drew on course elements which have been extensively tested and found to be highly effective in the field. These elements include:

  • Recognition of mental illness as a continuing traumatic event for the child and the family
  • Sensitivity to the subjective emotional issues faced by family caregivers and well children in the family
  • Recognition of the need to help lessen the day-to-day burdens of care and management
  • Gaining confidence and stamina for what can be a lifelong role of family understanding and support
  • Empowerment of family caregivers as effective advocates for their children
"We believe that there is a critical need in Indiana for this important program," says Amanda Ramirez, NAMI Indiana Program Director. "Indiana is 6th in the nation for detained youth, and national statistics reveal that 65% of boys and 75% of girls in juvenile detention have at least one mental disorder."

The course is a six-week long course taught by two teachers who have or are currently a direct caregiver of a youth with a mental illness. The course curriculum covers the following issues:

  • "It's not your fault; Mental Illnesses are Brain Disorders"
  • "The Biology of Mental Illness; Getting an Accurate Diagnosis"
  • "Treatment Works"
  • "Objective and Subjective Family Burden"
  • "The System Involved with Your Child and the Importance of Record Keeping"
  • "Advocacy, Review, Sharing, and Evaluation"

Will You Tell Us
How It's Going?

Since last December, we have asked friends of NAMI to make an effort to do something "extra" each month that will help improve the lives of Hoosiers affected by mental illness. With just a small effort from each of us every month, the overall impact can be tremendous!

We've heard so many inspiring stories over the past months, ranging from kind gestures such as visiting a friend who has trouble getting out of her home, registering and participating in a NAMI Walk, and volunteering in all sorts of capacities. Many also have made automatic recurring monthly donations. (To make an automatic recurring monthly donation now, CLICK HERE.

On behalf of all the people who have benefited from your kindness EVERY MONTH, Thank You.

Many have made efforts (large and small) that we haven't heard about. We'd like you to tell us your story about doing something "extra" by emailing inemail@nami.org. We'll share your great ideas for improving lives EVERY MONTH with everyone else in the next edition of NAMI Indiana State Essentials. (We won't use names unless you ask us to.) Thanks in advance for emailing.
