Most NAMI members and friends are aware that NAMI's single largest signature education program is Family to Family. However, those who are less familiar with this program may be interested to learn more about what it is, how it works and how it is so closely linked with NAMI's 30 year tradition of education, advocacy and awareness at the grass roots level.

Family-to-Family is a valuable 12-week course offered at no cost for family and caregivers of individuals with severe mental illnesses that discusses the clinical treatment of these illnesses and teaches the knowledge and skills that family members need to cope more effectively.

Each Family-to-Family course is facilitated by a team of two trained volunteer facilitators from local NAMI affiliates who themselves are family members or caregivers of persons with serious mental illness. To qualify to facilitate a Family-to-Family course, candidates must successfully complete extensive training.

Records were broken this spring as 19 individuals completed this intensive training and are now qualified to join the approximately 130 previously qualified trainers in the Hoosier state.

NAMI en Espanol
Also of important note is that two bilingual Spanish-speaking facilitators completed this training... a significant milestone in the month of April, which is  Minority Health Awareness Month. Soon Spanish speaking Family to Family classes will be available to families in need.

To help spread the word about the Spanish version of Family-to-Family, an outreach video will be widely distributed. It contains moving testimonials about the Spanish Family-to-Family program from teachers, trainers, and family members along with enthusiastic program endorsements from a medical doctor and a psychologist. It will be widely distributed throughout the United States, and beyond. The video was produced in Spanish with English subtitles. To view this compelling video, CLICK HERE.

"Throughout the state of Indiana, Family to Family continues to improve more lives each year," says NAMI Indiana Program Director Amanda Ramirez. "We are particularly pleased that we can now reach out to Indiana's growing Spanish speaking population with a version of the program that was specifically designed to respect important cultural differences from the English language version."

Those interested in learning more about either the English or the Spanish verison of Family to Family are encouraged to contact their local NAMI affiliate or the NAMI Indiana state office at 800-877-6442.

"If I Am the Last Resort, Where Do I Turn for Support?"

First responders often find themselves at a loss when they or their co-workers need support. This three hour course addresses panic attacks, post traumatic stress disorder, depression and thoughts of suicide that many in law enforcement have faced. It demonstrates how you are not alone in past experiences, how some of your actions and emotions may be the result of past encounters and where you might turn for personal support.

If interested, please contact Kellie Meyer at 317-925-9399 or 1-800-677-6442 to discuss cost levels and to schedule a group training at your workplace for a minimum of 12 people.
