NAMI IN President Addresses Indiana Commission on Mental Health

On September 4, NAMI Indiana president Teresa Hatten addressed the Indiana Commission on Mental Health on the topic of mental health issues concerning children.
The Indiana Commission on Mental Health is composed of two state senators, two state representatives, and 11 at-large members who all seek to improve the lives of Hoosiers affected by mental illness. They invite speakers to provide information gathered by advocacy groups like NAMI Indiana.
In her comments to the commission, Teresa shared both personal experience and official statistics gathered from a wide range of sources which suggest that increased access to treatment by persons with mental illness can benefit both individuals and society at large. "NAMI Indiana strongly believes it is critical that legislators hear the family voice on the topic of mental illness. We are appreciative of the time commission's invitation to speak at this forum," said NAMI Indiana President, Teresa Hatten. To read Teresa Hatten's full address, CLCK HERE.

Clinical Trial Update
Have you been diagnosed with a problem called Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and not responded to past medication or counseling treatment? If so, you may be eligible for a study examining if adding a medication called Paliperidone helps reduce your OCD symptoms. The Department of Psychiatry at IU School of Medicine is conducting this study. To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old and have problematic OCD symptoms despite having tried at least two OCD medications. If you participate in this study, you will be randomly assigned, that is by chance as in the "flip of a coin," to receive either the study medication (Paliperidone) or a sugar pill in addition to the medication you are currently taking. There will also be eight psychiatric evaluations that take place. Study medication and the evaluations will be provided at no charge. Risks associated with the study will be disclosed prior to study participation. For more information, CLICK HERE, or call (317) 278-0038, extension 1
NAMI Indiana suggests that only persons who fully understand the potential risks and benefits participate in clinical trials. For general information on participating in clinical trials, CLICK HERE.
