NAMI Indiana Trains 48 Persons in Criminal Justice & Mental Illness

On August 14, 2008, NAMI Indiana offered its most recent full-day training on mental health and criminal justice at Larue Carter State hospital in Indianapolis. Attendees came from across the state.

The diverse audience included law enforcement, corrections, public defense, probation and parole personnel. Social workers, elected officials and attorneys also participated in the training. Many attendees received professional training credits for their participation, such as CLE credits for attorneys, CEU credits for social workers and ILEA credits for members of law enforcement.

"The Criminal Justice & Mental Illness training program leads to improved working conditions for persons working in the criminal justice system and increased quality of life for persons with mental illness," said Kellie Meyer, Director of Criminal Justice and Development for NAMI Indiana.

"Previous research conducted by NAMI in the state of Indiana has established that this sort of training has reduced the incidents of violence in the criminal justice system by up to 70%."

A second Criminal Justice & Mental Illness training is scheduled for Thursday, October 30, 2008. Click here for more information.
