The Enlightened Manager Newsletter
A quick read for busy government, industry and association executives, managers & sales professionals

"Peace is not some abstract concept far removed from our everyday lives. It is a question of how each one of us plants and cultivates the seeds of peace in the reality of daily living, in the depths of our being, throughout our lives. I am certain that herein lies the most reliable path to lasting peace."
- Daisaku Ikeda

Article11. Overcome negativity with enlightened management

I participated in a wonderful dialogue recently with 19 people who shared their personal and professional growth challenges. These included:
  • Having the courage to face our fears, phobias and anxieties
  • Calm obsessive thoughts
  • Be able to focus better
  • React more positively (be open) to new ideas and actions
  • Love and believe in ourselves
  • Don't compare ourselves to others
  • Have the courage to take risks
  • Talk less, listen more
  • Don't always have to be busy
  • Have the wisdom and strength to make the right decision
  • Be less negative
  • Stop being angry
  • Forgive ourselves and others
There were several common themes that would seem to indicate that everyone has some degree of internal negativity that manifests itself in their work and personal life. But, to be a more enlightened manager and human being, we need to take constructive steps to defeat these negative tendencies...to overshadow them with appreciation and compassion. To sow seeds of peace so we can build a more positive workplace and life.

It's a major antidote for many workplace ills and definitely a medicine worth taking.

Sincerely,

  Mike

Article22. How effective is your growth planning process?

We've all heard the story about the emperor who had no clothes. Unfortunately, this phenomenon exists within too many government contractors. A leader's unwillingness to periodically self-assess and his/her staff's unwillingness to provide honest feedback can be a tremendous growth inhibitor.

To identify the specific business areas in need of improvement, have an independent expert perform a business growth assessment. This analysis can be conducted as a combination of a web survey and key staff interviews. Everything from the effectiveness of strategic planning, customer or citizen services, sales and proposal management should be considered. Capabilities that should be evaluated include:
  • Strategic planning process and adherence
  • Core services/solutions and target market alignment and focus
  • Marketing strategy and execution
  • Business development staff performance
  • Opportunity qualification and capture management (new and re-compete)
  • Pursuit and bid decision process
  • Proposal development and review process
This type of periodic assessment is crucial to business success. Identified gaps in the business growth process can be translated into breakthrough objectives and priority actions with a reasonable assurance that precious resources are applied to the improvements that will make the most difference. Successful contractors and agencies often employ this type of process. And, it is the only way I know to overcome institutionalized crisis management and a low win rate.
