Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Supporting Survivors Beading in Kenya
Mary O. a businesswoman in Nairobi, Kenya, started The Breast Cancer Support Group after her first occurrence of breast cancer. She had noticed that most of the women in her support group had been kicked out by their husbands after their surgeries and fired by their employers (because they missed too much time for treatments). They needed a way to support themselves and their children.
Mary taught them beading as a means of support. The support group attempts to give them back their dignity and independence, as they provide emotional, spiritual, psychological and economic support to each other. Items handmade by women in the support group to financially support them and their children include the BCS Beaded Jewelry Set (lariat, necklace and bracelet) in traditional Breast Cancer Awareness Pink as well as many other color options, including green-our most popular color! The BCS Beaded Necklace also comes in pink and a variety of earth tones and the BCS Lariat & Bracelet comes in many beautiful colors. Special pricing is available for sets. They have also made some small Beaded Purses. We've discounted prices for October.
Kenya has been hit hard by the global recession, which came on the heels of their election violence in early 2008. As a cancer survivor myself, I am really committed to supporting these women! We would love to give this group some larger orders so if you know of a breast cancer group, treatment center, organization, that would like to order more of these-and even use them for local fund-raisers-please let us know! We can give you good wholesale pricing, as well! |
