January 2012
President's Letter

Happy New Year! As we look forward to 2012 I wanted to briefly recap for you some of the highlights for FSA in 2011. We enjoyed networking and learning together during our Chapter events throughout the year and thank all that attended. We had a great turn out and a wonderful program during the Executive Retreat held in Orlando during June. We celebrated receiving the "Superior Chapter Merit Award" - the ASA's highest Chapter award for the second year in a row!

We are currently in the process of scheduling our 2012 Chapter events to provide you with up-to-date topics, opportunities to meet and network in the industry, help the community, as well as have a little fun. We are all looking forward to returning to the Rosen Centre in Orlando for our 2012 Executive Retreat, June 20-21. We hope you will join us for these upcoming events!

In 2012 FSA will be focusing on increasing our membership. We encourage members to reach out to your staffing colleagues and encourage them to join so they can take advantage of the many services and resources FSA offers.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to wish you a prosperous 2012!

Joel Malek

President, Florida Staffing Association

January's Federal Reserve Beige Book
Presented by Bruce Steinberg

Excerpts from January 2012 Fed Beige Book
Sixth District-- Atlanta (AL, FL, GA, LA, MS & TN)
Sixth District business contacts described economic activity as expanding at a modest pace from late November through December. Reports from most sectors were positive, yet expectations remained guarded. ... Most manufacturers and transportation contacts noted positive activity, especially related to exports. Bankers noted that deposit growth continued to outpace loan demand. Employment growth was positive but tepid across the District as employers remained cautious with regard to hiring. Concerns over increased input costs eased further as most commodity prices leveled off and business' inflation expectations remained in check. Few contacts reported having significant pricing power.

Manufacturing and Transportation

On balance, District manufacturing contacts showed notable improvements in both levels of new orders and production in November after reporting several months of decelerating activity. In addition, more contacts reported improving expectations for future production than in previous reports. Export manufacturers and auto producers, in particular, reported strong activity. Auto producers noted that recent flooding in Thailand would likely have a modest, negative impact on production of some models as several plants in that region were damaged or forced to curtail operations for several weeks.

Reports from transportation industry contacts remained positive in late November and December. Port authorities cited volume increases over last year with notable strength in exports. Trucking firms continued to report increased demand for their services but were struggling to meet customer needs because of a significant shortage of long-haul drivers.

Employment and Prices

Contacts across most sectors continued to report modest hiring activity across much of the District. Most of the hiring has been temporary in nature and tied to seasonal employment. However, there were some scattered reports among health care and hospitality contacts in South Florida that hiring was occurring as a result of increased demand or expansion. ... Firms also noted reluctance towards adding new full-time employees because of uncertainty surrounding health care reform, a large pool of both over and under qualified applicants, and because productivity enhancements have made several positions redundant.

CAREEXCHANGE Honored by The Commonwealth Institute

Sue Romanos
President & CEO of CAREERXCHANGE

CAREERXCHANGE has been honored by The Commonwealth Institute of South Florida as a Top Women-Led Business in Florida.

The Commonwealth Institute is a community of accomplished women professionals who are growing their businesses, creating jobs and stimulating the economy. TCI is the only community of business leaders that provides access to a collective brain trust for women CEOs and Senior Executives in all stages of business growth. Nationwide, only 3% of top positions in organizations are filled by women although 50% of professional and managerial positions are held by women. What distinguishes those women who have made it to the top in Florida-based organizations? That was the focus of the study undertaken by the JAE Leadership Institute at the University of Miami School of Business Administration, in collaboration with The Commonwealth Institute, South Florida. Senior executives, primary owners of companies, leaders of corporate subsidiaries, and members of The Commonwealth Institute have been included in this study. Along with their approaches to business strategy, operations, leadership, and personal development, other key areas to be explored include the women's backgrounds, career progression, work habits, life choices, and motivation.

Member Spotlight- Coastal Driver Leasing
The Premier Supplier of Commercial Truck Drivers in the Southeast is GROWING again.

Best Drivers continues along a path of growth after serving logistics & transportation clients for over 28 years throughout the Southeastern United States.  We are announcing the opening of our newest location, Coastal Driver Leasing, in Tampa FL.  The Florida branches of BEST DRIVERS, known as COASTAL DRIVER LEASING, specialize in providing top quality CDL Drivers to companies throughout the state.  The Florida Expansion will be led by Shannon Bolan, Florida Regional Manager and Andy Flanagan, Business Development Manager.  Together, Shannon and Andy have over 25 years experience in transportation staffing.  Andy specializes in Market Development and account penetration and Shannon in the management of new and existing branch sales and service.  Shannon is also an active member of the Florida Staffing Association, currently serving as the Vice President of the association, assuming the role of FSA president in June of 2012.

BEST DRIVERS has made the INC 500 four times and prides itself on growing through innovation and service in the industry.  During the nineties, Best Drivers grew to be the statewide leader in Tennessee from Knoxville to Nashville to Memphis.  Beginning in 2000, the company expanded into Georgia.  The next decade saw rapid growth with expansion into Kentucky, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and North Carolina.  Best Drivers had two mergers in 2007 and 2008 to boost service growth and add new markets, but most of the growth has come from within by focusing on strict quality and safety standards that meet or exceed those of their clients.  2011 was yet another record setting year company wide as sales and service reached an all time high.  While reaching these records, Best Drivers made sure to take great care of all of their highly valued personnel.   Retention of the best drivers and managers has paid off with a fifth award from INC Magazine in 2011 which named Best Drivers yet again as one of the nation's fastest growing private companies.
