Get those projects done!
It's springtime and that means great weather and great opportunities to get some projects and honey-do's done. Here is an Arizona Midday segment with some great tips on painting (great Mother's Day present), scorpion and bug control and misting systems (also great Mother's Day presents). All very relevant subjects with great advice!
Do you have a project you'd like answers to here in our newsletter? Or, do you want to have your project featured here? Send me an email! |

Composting
Did Earth Day spark any new ideas for ways you can reduce, reuse or recycle? It got me thinking about composting and how it keeps your waste out of the landfills and significantly increases the quality of your soil. It looks pretty easy too. Here's the gist of it:
1) Decide on a pile or a bin. A bin like one of these works great if you are trying to keep it out of sight and/or keeping pets or pests out of it. Either way, keep it out of direct sunlight.
2) Start with a layer of twigs, straw and/or newspaper (browns/carbons), then start adding your organic waste (greens/nitrogens) like lawn clippings, fruit and veggie scraps, eggshells, etc. Start to balance your greens and browns. Avoid using meat, fish, dairy or whole eggs and avoid items that don't break down such as aluminum, glass, plastics and metals.
3) You can add in layers of soil or manure or you can use a compost additive like this one which aids in digestion of organic waste and can control odors.
4) Keep your compost pile as wet as a wrung out sponge and turn it once a week.
You'll have nutrient rich compost for your garden and plants in about 3-6 months. Easy Peasy. Sound interesting and want to get started? Check out the offer at the bottom of this email. It might help :)

Memorial Day 2012
According to the US Department of Veterans affairs, Memorial Day (originally Decoration Day) was established by Major General John A. Logan three years after the Civil War had ended. Gen. Logan's order for his posts in 1868 was to decorate graves of fallen soldiers "with the choicest flowers of springtime... We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. ... Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic."
Today, as you know, Americans celebrate Memorial Day in a variety of ways by visiting cemeteries or memorials, watching parades and holding family gatherings. Whatever you will be doing this coming Memorial Day weekend, we hope you enjoy and please take time to remember our military members.

Relay for Life!
We did it! We walked all night long. We walked for those fighting and those who have lost the fight. We walked because we want more birthdays for everyone. Darlene (pictured above) walked for FH customers Jim Winchester and Chuck Rippy. Take a look at a few pictures here. Including YOUR donations, we raised $2822!!
