ATLAS NEWSLETTER

Dear Atlas subscriber,

Welcome to the February edition of Atlas.

Along with the Qantas and Singapore Airlines sale, British Airways have brought out their popular First and Business Class Half Roundtrip Special. These offers are very popular and have a limited sale time, so please make sure you book soon as seats are selling fast.

This month I'm also delighted to include some exciting offers departing from Perth, as well as the news that Qatar Airways will start operating services out of W.A. later in the year. They have released some amazing launch fares with Business Class to London from AUD6499.00.

Lastly, if you really want to impress your valentine next week, check out The Shangri La Hotel, Sydney and their new award-winning Chi Spa for the ultimate indulgence.

As always I appreciate any feedback you might have.

Sincerely,

Sarah Bush

Director

 TRAVEL NEWS HEADLINES
MORE FLIGHTS TO DALLAS

Qantas has ramped up services on its Sydney-Dallas-Brisbane-Sydney service from four to six times weekly.

The Australia-Texas link will go daily from 1 July 2012.

Meanwhile Qantas' spectacular 747-400 Wunala Dreaming aboriginal print livery has now been removed from the VH-OEJ registered aircraft following a 21 day repainting project.

VIRGIN AUSTRALIA

Virgin Australia announced additional flights as part of an accelerated capacity growth plan for major corporate, resources sector and leisure routes. The airline will be introducing the extra services between Brisbane-Melbourne, Sydney-Melbourne, Adelaide-Melbourne, Brisbane-Cairns, Brisbane-Proserpine, Brisbane-Gladstone and Brisbane-Rockhampton.

Virgin Australia will be able to offer travellers the increased convenience of more flights, more often, across the country's busiest capital city trunk routes, as well as on growing resources sector and leisure routes in Queensland.

QANTASLINK INCREASING QUEENSLAND FLIGHTS

QantasLink have announced a significant boost to services throughout Queensland.

QantasLink will launch Boeing 717 services to Rockhampton and Gladstone on 15 March 2012 and Mackay on 26 March 2012 following the addition of the B717 aircraft into its fleet.

QantasLink was recently voted the world's best regional airline by prestigious aviation journal Air Transport World.

QantasLink Executive Manager Narendra Kumar said he was very pleased to announce that QantasLink would be jetting off to three booming Queensland destinations.

"The introduction of QantasLink's two new B717 aircraft in Queensland will deliver an increase of over 200,000 seats per year in Queensland," Mr Kumar said.

DID YOU KNOW

Previously the domain of Tokyo, it looks like capsule hotels may come to Hong Kong. A company called Galaxy Stars HK is offering developers a new range of "WiFi enabled capsules" which can be stacked together to create inexpensive visitor accommodation.

"It's like Lego" said managing director Eric Wong, who said he wants to "bring this product to Hong Kong tourists to relieve Hong Kong's hotel shortage". They're not unlike a First Class aircraft suite, measuring about 2 metres long, 1 metre wide and 1.15 metres high, and come complete with a bed, air conditioning, power outlets and a computer desk.

QATAR AIRWAYS OPENS HEATHROW LOUNGE

Qatar Airways have opened a new premium lounge at Heathrow. The Terminal 4 lounge will be the airline's first outside of Doha and will be available to First and Business class passengers. It comes as the carrier prepares to boost its flights from Heathrow to Doha on 25  March 2012, when  the route will operate five times daily. The new lounge has been designed to resemble a boutique hotel or private member's club and is staffed by ex-five star hotel and restaurant employees.

Facilities include private showers, heated floors, hotel-style towels and luxury toiletries and amenities, as well as free WiFi, power sockets and a business centre with PCs and printers.

QANTAS CODESHARE SERVICES TO NORFOLK ISLAND TERMINATED

Qantas codeshare services to and from Norfolk Island will be withdrawn this month. The Federal Government of Australia has completed a tender process for the flight operations between Australia and Norfolk Island. It has been announced that Air New Zealand is the successful carrier.

                                                THREE OF THE BEST

This month Jennifer Waters from our Crows Nest office, presents her three of the best.

AIRLINE PRODUCT:

Having revamped its image in May last year, I find the Virgin Australia product to be much more polished and professional. With a new name & livery, new uniforms, the new wide-body aircraft and the introduction of Business class cabins, they are definitely competing with Qantas for the Business market. Having flown from Sydney to Melbourne recently, I was able to experience their Sydney Lounge Premium Entry. After arriving at the Premium Entry on the departure level of Sydney Airport, I was met by an airline representative who checked me into their Lounge and the flight to Melbourne at a private reception desk. There was also a dedicated security screening point away from the hustle & bustle of the airport terminal. A very pleasant experience indeed.

HOTEL/RESORT:

If you are travelling to the 'Big Apple' and looking for somewhere special to stay, I would recommend Crosby Street Hotel New York. It is the only Firmdale property in the USA (others are located in London).

This luxury boutique hotel is located on a quiet cobbled street in the heart of New York's vibrant SoHo neighbourhood. Everything is on the doorstep including some of the world's most exciting shopping, bars, restaurants, cafes and galleries.

The rooms are fabulous. I love their individuality. Each room is unique in design, offering high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling warehouse style windows. The interior design of the rooms is characterised by a fresh, contemporary and sometimes quirky look. There is great emphasis upon colour and texture. All rooms offer WiFi, flat screen TV's and iPod players.

DESTINATION:

Cinque Terra, which translates to Five Lands, is bellissimo! A picture perfect region of Italy located along the Ligurian coast. The Cinque Terre is a National Park. It has retained the natural beauty of its landscape and the shabby 'authentic' charm of the five fishing villages - Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Manarola, Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare because it has been a UNESCO protected territory since 1997.

The largest of the villages is Monterosso, at one end of the Cinque Terra. It has the largest beaches and the most hotels, which makes it quite different from the other four villages which have a more old-world charm, narrow, winding streets lined with colourful old houses stacked haphazardly on top of each other.

I stayed in Riomaggiore, at the other end of the Cinque Terra, a small village where all the locals are friendly & welcoming. Most of the action in Riomaggiore is on the main street, where there are cafes, bars, restaurants, and of course, gelaterie. Here we experienced the best seafood, pizza & gelato!!!!

We spent our days here hiking along the coastline trails in between the villages, taking in the amazing views and local hospitality. Some of the walks were longer & steeper than others, so there was always the backup of the local train or ferry service (during high season).

A couple of travel tips - take good walking shoes, avoid the midday sun if hiking in July/August, and purchase a Cinque Terra Card (valid for 1, 3 or 7 days) which entitles you to walk the paths and use the local transport during its validity.

Stay tuned for next month's Three of The Best!
