BUSINESS TRAVEL MAKES SALES

Meeting

Travel and corporate performance go hand in hand according to a new report by the World Travel and Tourism Council. In an era when technology makes doing business easier, the report shows that still 50% of potential customers can be converted with a traditional face to face meeting.

In the report, nine out of 10 Chinese executives said a face to face meeting has the potential to increase future sales, which is a significant find for Australian businesses as China is a "booming market for their products", said Australian Tourism Export Council MD Felicia Mariani.

LONDON HEATHROW'S NEWEST ADDITION TO TERMINAL 5

Terminal 5

Terminal 5C, the third and final part of London Heathrow Terminal 5 has officially opened.

Terminal 5C has been specially designed to accommodate British Airways new A380 fleet. This will allow direct boarding, meaning 3 million less people each year will need to climb stairs or travel by coach to board their flight.

There are more Departure Gates which offer more space and more opportunities to grow.

THREE OF THE BEST

This month Uschi Howard, General Manager from our office in Newport, Northern Beaches presents her personal favourites from around the world.

AIRLINE PRODUCT: Uschi

Being a Travel Agent I like to mix my airline experiences to gain a better knowledge of the products on offer. Over the years I found that the little joys in air travel often happen because of the people rather than the superior hardware. The questions to ask must of course always include "What is their safety record?", "How regularly do they fly?", "Do they fly the most direct route?" and "How old is their fleet?" but it also should include: "How is their customer service attitude?" It is all about the attitude, culture and focus on the traveller. Hot towels at the beginning and end of a long flight in all classes, regular offers of water and snacks, availability of cabin staff throughout the flight, good food and a "can do" attitude all contribute to a more enjoyable and relaxing flight. I have seen flight attendants take children for a walk and one airline even offered face painting for the younger travellers! Of course it always reduces the stress levels if someone asks if there anything they can do to help or responds with a smile and an "of course" to your request. So with that in mind, purely on the basis of superior attitude towards excellence in customer service, Singapore Airlines gets the trophy from me.

HOTEL/RESORT:

My favourite resort has to be the Como Shambhala Estate, Ubud, Bali, a retreat like no other. Situated on a ridge above the Ayung River on one side and the rice fields and gardens of Ubud on the other it oozes serenity,Como Bali beauty and style. The Resort offers various grades of accommodation in five Residences consisting of a Como Shambhala Suite in each plus 3-4 beautifully appointed Suites and rooms. Each Residence is themed around a different element: Wind, Water, Fire, Mist and Earth with its own pool and public area. The experience starts from when you check in and are introduced to your personal assistant who helps you throughout your stay, organising both complimentary and chargeable activities. This is the place to go to clear your mind, relax, reconnect with yourself and indulge in beautiful treatments and experiences such as organic food, yoga, walks, meditation, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, swimming and so much more. Of course after all that you can explore the lovely Ubud area with cooking schools, markets, arts and crafts. This is Bali at its very best. Situated only 45 - 60 minutes drive from Denpasar Airport.

DESTINATION:

One of my very first introductions to travelling in Asia was Bhutan, the land of the Thunder Dragon, bordering China, Tibet and India at the foot of the Himalayas. It took me completely byBhutan surprise Bhutan is anything but ordinary. Mainly Buddhist, its history goes back thousands of years and as one travel writer put it "It has one foot in the past and one in the future". It is ruled by a King and the women carry the family name. Tobacco is illegal, there are no "golden arches", Starbucks or other western inventions. Rather, there is beautiful country side, incredible traditions, festivals, temples and beautiful people. They are friendly, curious and don't seem to actually know much about the vicious treadmill of our Western "fast lane". Travelling around Bhutan is an experience in itself. Older cars, beautiful hotels next door to very authentic "lodges". Pack your watch away, take a deep breath and start exploring under the guidance of their university educated and local English speaking guides. Bhutan measures its Gross National Product in Happiness. It simply has to be experienced to be understood.

During the six months test run period, the use of biofuel will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1,500 tonnes.
