5 Radical Changes Associations Must Consider to Remain Relevant | |
The beginning of this decade marked a new environment in which associations find themselves facing many challenges. The mismatch between the new and the past environment has created the need for associations to make some major shifts in goals, structure and vision. In their book "Race for Relevance: 5 Radical Changes for Associations," Harrison Coerver and Mary Byers, CAE, identify five changes associations must make to survive. They call them "radical", and they are. The changes challenge the way we operate, plan and view our associations. Embracing them will take courage, but ignoring them could be catastrophic.
In an upcoming series of articles, AMP Management Services will explore each of these changes, discussing why they are important, why associations will resist, and what can be accomplished by making these changes. We tackle the first one below.
Radical Change #1: Associations Must Adopt a 5-Member Competency-Based Board
AMP works with associations and certification boards that are typically run by a 10-12 member Board of Directors, often consisting of like-minded individuals who have long been active in the organization and have moved into a Board position following a long, complicated tenure of committee work and other volunteer opportunities.
The first and most critical change an association must consider (which provides the foundation to make the other four radical changes as previously outlined) is moving to a 5-member, competency based Board of Directors, embracing these ideas as the norm:
- What Board members know is more important than who they know, who they represent, or where they are from
- A balanced Board requires a careful, thorough selection process
- The status quo has to be challenged. Board members must acknowledge their primary commitment to serve the organization until their term ends and that networking and social opportunities are a secondary benefit to the position.

Recent Client Feedback is Music to Our Ears |

Though the Rolling Stones "can't get no satisfaction," at AMP, we pride ourselves on providing quality service to keep our clients satisfied. We understand that you dedicate significant funds and countless hours to developing and growing successful certification and licensure programs. AMP wants your programs to rock and roll by providing the best service, quality and value in the industry.
To monitor this goal, AMP periodically conducts a client satisfaction survey to ensure the service we provide is living up to your high standards. Earlier this year, we finished a survey of clients (those that utilize our test development and administration services) with topics ranging from communication to customer service to the AMP Assessment Center Network. We've been pleased in the past with client response, but we were especially excited to see our scores go up on this survey... several of you even gave us perfect scores!
We were happy to see solid service scores overall and were particularly elated with the highest marks being in critical areas:
- Quick and effective communication
- Quality deliverables
- Professional customer service
We learn a lot from the survey about areas of particular strength, potential weakness, and how we can better serve our clients. Your answers and comments help us evaluate internal processes to provide an even higher quality of service. There were many highlights from the survey, but we are most proud of the fact that once again, 100% of those responding to the question indicated they would recommend AMP to other organizations seeking testing services. This is the highest praise we can receive and cannot thank you enough!
In the coming months, we will be gathering similar information about our association management services and product offerings. We want to thank those of you who took time out of your busy schedules to provide us with feedback. Thanks to you, we had our highest survey response rate ever and that deserves an enthusiastic "Rock On"!

We are also in the process of establishing three additional sites in Tampa Bay, FL; Brewer, ME; and Lake Success, NY which will open later this year. We will continue to monitor candidate volume and look for opportunities to expand our coverage for the convenience of your candidates. |

Business Development | |
The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) was established in 1955 to serve the needs of medical assistants by providing education, certification, and advocacy for quality patient-centered health care. Towards this end, in 2012, AAMA contracted with AMP to conduct an occupational analysis of the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) program with a national survey provided to up 60,000 respondents. The results of the study will be used to ensure high quality certification examination development by determining the scope and body of knowledge required for competent practice as a CMA. To learn more about the CMA program and AAMA, please visit their website, www.aama-ntl.org.
