Spring is in the air and it's time (finally!) to get outside and enjoy ourselves! One of the neatest things about homeschooling is just how "portable" it is. Believe it or not, kids can read and learn perfectly well while lounging on a warm trampoline or perched in a tree branch. And, of course, they feel a little bit "special" while doing so! Heck, I remember our high school teacher occasionally letting us go out on the school lawn to read and what a treat that was!

Take advantage of your freedom to get outside and enjoy this wonderful time of year. If you're lost of ideas on what to do, I'll give you a few suggestions in this month's newsletter.

Though full of fun, this time of year tends to bring with it a bit of stress as well as we all ready for annual testing. I have two kiddos down and one to go. For those of you who want your children to brush up on their multiplication facts before testing, be sure and watch for our special "Mayday!" sale info to follow this newsletter.

 Happy spring!

Alphabet Art

Huffman

In case you can't tell, the photos above are the letters HUFFMAN, which is my oldest son's last name. I made this alphabet art as a gift for him and his wife for Christmas. My younger boys and I walked around town and gathered the images one afternoon. This made the collage all the more special since it included a window from Town Hall (N), the time capsule two doors down (A) and the train tracks at the end of town (second F), all from the town where he was raised.

We managed to find a sunny day in December to gather our images but this time of year is much more ideal. This would be a great project to do with your children. You could write your last name, or words like FAITH, LOVE or FAMILY. You could even get a head start on Christmas gifts for your own friends and family. Take a picnic lunch and make an afternoon of it!

Your Own Nature Museum

When my older boys were at home, they created their own "nature museum" right in our school room. I think it's about time I did the same with my younger kids. They displayed preserved insects and butterflies, birds nests and eggs, pressed flowers, interesting rocks, petrified wood, samples of different soils and sand, and whatever other interesting bits of fauna and flora they happened across. I was always impressed with how creative they were. It was also interesting to watch as they eagerly showed their "museum" to friends and family. Often, visiting children would be so impressed, they would all, immediately set out in search of new treasures.

Creating such a museum is a simple endeavor.  I simply provided a small bookshelf (even an empty shelf will do), some containers, and magnifying glasses. I gathered all our guidebooks and nature books into this area and would occasionally display a nature related poster above the shelf. It was a simple project, but one that fostered creativity and a love of nature.
