Love is in the air! With Valentine's Day just around the corner we thought we'd use this newsletter to provide you with some fun Valentine's Day and indoor activities and resources. These are sure to add a much needed bright shot to a dreary winter day.

We also have a special bit of "business" news. We are now offering a Times Tales Group Buy option, ideal for co-ops or homeschool groups. With this option, you'll be able to receive $10 off the cost of a Times Tales program, and the coordinator will receive a free Memory Trigger and Mini Flip as a thank you. You will be receiving an email with all the details immediately following this one, or you can check them out here or view the video below.

Happy Valentine's Day!
Fun with Weights

scales

Have you ever guessed at how much something weighs and found you were WAY off? Well, here is a quick and fun way to teach children to better estimate weight. All you need is a small household scale (postal or kitchen scales work well), some paper, and some energetic children.

Instructions:

  • On slips of paper, write six different weights, making sure to keep them within the weight limits of your particular scale.
  • Fold the slips of paper and place them in a bowl or basket.
  • Allow the first child to pull a slip of paper from the basket and read the weight aloud.
  • Each child may now search the home and return with an item he/she thinks will match the weight on the paper.
  • Weigh all the items and record the weights.
  • Determine who was closest and return the slip of paper to the bowl.
  • Have everyone return their items. (You'll be sorry if you skip this step.)
  • The "winner" chooses the next slip of paper for round two.

Valentine's Day Fun!

  • Click the cover above to get a free Valentine's Day E-Book from the folks at Living on a Dime. (Good through Valentine's Day only.)
  • Classbrain.com has a whole page of Valentine's printables to suprise your kids with over the next week
  • .If you want to take it a bit further, AtoZTeacherStuff has a large list of lesson plans as well as crafts and such.
  • If you have any small candy canes left over from Christmas, these heart lollipops would be a lot of fun to make with the kids.
  • Put the kids to work making their own Valentine cards using this lovely printable from Homework.com.
  • My animal-loving daughter and I had a lot of fun making animal heart Valentines from DTTK, on year. (Scroll down a bit and you'll see a bunny, kitty, butterfly, etc) Adorable!
  • You'll find lots of resources here, too.
  • And, of course, Jan Brett always has gorgeous artwork to color and craft with.

Around the Web

Here are a few fun sites I found on the web this month.
  • The San Francisco Symphony Kid's Site is a great place to play around with music and experiment with different instruments.
  • NASA Kids' Club offers educational games and educational activities for grades K-4, geared mostly to math, science and technology.
  • Having trouble explaining a math concept? Check out this massive listing of math explanations. Find the topic you're looking for and see a demonstration right on the "chalkboard".
  • PurposeGames is a great site to reinforce learning. Assign your student to create his own game or quiz with the information he's learned, then share it with friends. We're studying the skeletal system and I found a game already there that goes perfectly with what we've just learned!
Happy Homeschooling!

We wish you every success in your homeschooling journey!
