I don't know about you but I'm eagerly awaiting the end of the school year and the relatively restful days of summer. Not that we tend to do a lot of resting. Summer is my time to work on the house and catch up on projects. I also do a lot of planning for the upcoming year. Still, there is relief in being free from our usual daily schedule and I look forward to tackling my ever-growing project list.
This year, I think we'll do something similar to what we did last year with our Summer Fun List. I also thought these Summer Door Dots were a really cute idea. What about you? We'd love to hear how you plan (or don't plan) for summer.

Vacation Education
| This year our family will be taking a week long vacation to Yellowstone and I've been able to incorporate that into our last few weeks of homeschooling. My two oldest children have given a budget and assigned the task of planning out each day's itinerary. Here are a few of the tasks they had to accomplish:
- Determine gas mileage and cost for various legs of the trip
- Plan and budget for meals each day
- Design a form for recording the itinerary/budget
- Plan and budget for any additional entertainment (visiting the Museum of the Rockies, a rafting trip, etc)
- Plan out each day of sightseeing, knowing the specific "must see" sites for each day in the park
This assignment has been surprisingly educational. The kids have learned to research different cities and lodging resources, calculate mileage and meals and have had to read up on the Yellowstone guidebook. After completing this assignment I think they will both have a greater appreciation for the actual trip and a familiarity with the park, itself.
I highly recommend this activity for all families. Even if it's planning a fantasy vacation, you're sure to learn a great deal. If you'd like to use our form you can download it HERE. (You can adapt it for your own destination)
