Time Flies!

You always hear folks tell you, "time flies, enjoy them while they're young" but you don't realize just how quickly it zips by until you've been there. I was extremely proud to see my son graduate from Fire Academy this weekend and am excited for him as he begins his desired career as a firefighter. But, at the same time, it's almost difficult to believe he's on his own, married and with a career.

Thankfully, I still have little ones at home to keep me company. I just want to encourage all of you in your efforts as you share your time learning with, teaching and loving your children. The years truly do fly by. Cherish these days and hours. They are likely the most meaningful of your life and have long-lasting influence, even if you fail to see it in the day-to-day of laundry, peanut-butter sandwiches, and bruised knees. Enjoy!

Resources on the Web
I recently received an email from Tenmarks.com about their new Teacher Zone math resource site offering thousands of free video lessons to homeschoolers and teachers. I checked it out and was truly impressed. All the 3-5 minute video lessons are neatly organized and easy to find. This is a great way to supplement or review math concepts or get homework help.

Phyllis Wheeler of Motherboard Books has a free 10 minute audio titled What Homeschool Moms Really Need to Know About Computers that addresses internet safety and other issues.

Perform experiments in this virtual kitchen from Zoom Kids without making a mess! Take their challenge and try to find the one pattern they have in mind. Succeed and you'll gain access to a "Great Reward"!

A friend's son was recently given the assignment of building an air powered car. In looking for ideas for him, I came across this fun video for making a balloon powered car from a card, duct tape, a straw and wheels. I know my boys will love trying this out! (Don't blame me if you end up singing the "Gummy Bear" song all day after viewing the video!)

Check out FamilyMint if you are looking for a way to help your kids learn about money. The program has two kid's interfaces, depending on skill level and helps kids set goals, learn about interest and more. Parents can automate allowance or match deposits for specific goals, set interest rates, and more. This is a really neat way to work with your kids as you teach them to handle their finances responsibly.

I love these Vacation Jars from The Thrifty Ba blog. I thought this was a great idea and love the idea of having the jars on display where they can easily be taken down and looked at. Each time they go on vacation they keep memorabilia that can easily be placed in a jar; ticket stubs, rocks, shells, menus, etc. What a fun idea!
Email Education

Email can be a fun way to interact with your children while doing school at the same time. My two oldest have Gmail accounts that I have full access to. The only ones with their addresses are our family members. Still, I've found it to be a great way to pass along fun videos or clips or websites that pertain to something we're studying. Their older siblings and grandparents also write them via email, giving them something to look forward to while they practice their typing and writing skills in response.

Lately, I've begun to use email a bit more. I might give my older daughter the assignment of learning about a certain fact (usually relating to our study), pasting the information in a Word document, attaching to an email and sending back to me. Or I may ask her to type up the answer to a question, include a related image, and reply. I could also send a large image and ask her to re-size the image to a specific size and return to me as an attachment. These assignments tend to be fun because they are short and unexpected but give your children practice in using the computer in different ways. Another idea would be to give her a list of chores to be done and ask her to use the Table option in Word to create a chore chart, save to her computer, and email back to me.

You could also use email as a method of delivery for a Daily Writing Prompt.

You can find some prompts for May:
theteacherscorner.net (includes pdfs with photos that you can attach to your email or print out if not using email)
teachers.net
tooter4kids.com
educationworld.com (printable in pdf if you'd prefer not to email)

General prompts can also be found below:
superteacherworksheets.com
creativewritingprompts.com

There are many computer, typing and writing related tasks that can be taught via email to add a bit of fun to your school day. Just think of what you'd like your child to learn and I bet you'll be able to come up with a task for them to practice.
