Be sure to read to the end to see how you can give your friends a discount on Times Tales and win a free E-Book for yourself! Fall Family Fun
I love the fall and Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I love the colors, the smells, family. . . everything, really. This month we hope to share a few things to make your fall even more fun.
First, check out one mom's brilliant idea for making a Family Activity Binder. I can see where this would be a wonderful idea. A college in our area hosts an annual World Food Festival where they have lots of booths where you can taste food from different countries. It's fun and educational and I forget when it is every year, since they don't advertise heavily. A binder like this would keep me on track so I'd know when to watch for it.
Do you have a seamstress in your household or are you looking for inexpensive Christmas gifts to make? Check out this nifty oven hand mitt tutorial. I like them so much I'm going to make a few for myself, but they'd make a great beginning Home Ec project.
If the weather is nasty and you have some bored kiddo's on your hands, check out Canon's papercraft projects. I have one child that will just LOVE these.
Molly Green at Econobusters is having a 30 Day Thanksgiving Countdown with Thursday and Saturday posts focusing on children and family. But be sure and check out the other posts as well. For instance, today's table decor post is a perfect craft for kids (and adults!) of all ages. See the cute little paper pumpkins right below the title of this article? Check out the blog for the super-simple instructions.
And...watch your emails for a super SPECIAL SALE, to be announced shortly.

Memory Trick of the Month - b's and d's
|
It is common for most children to mix up their letters
when learning to write. Through repetitive writing, this backwards problem
usually fades away naturally. However, this is not the case for everyone. My
eldest son, who is slightly dyslexic, was still occasionally making perfect
mirror images of words, even after writing for many years. One of the best ways
I have found to remedy this problem is to give them a mnemonic trick or tool to
remember the correct way to write a letter or number. To help a child remember which way to write a
"b" & "d" do the following":
Have them make fists with their pointer fingers extended
on the table. Tell them that they are making a bed with their hands. See the
headboard and footboard of the bed? Tell them to imagine the word "bed" with the
first hand being the "b" and the other hand the "d".
Another trick for remember the difference is to show your child that his mouth makes a line when he makes the /b/ sound and the line comes first when writing a "b". His mouth makes a circle with the /d/ sound and the circle comes first when writing a "d".
What about you? Do you have any good "b" and "d" tricks?

Fall Freebies!
|
|
Wow! Wow! Wow! I don't know what more I can say about this month's freebies. This month we have two amazing, totally free deals from The Old Schoolhouse Magazine.
Autumn Treasures is the first in the Download N Go series by Amanda Bennet. This Unit Study/Lapbook is a ready-to-go unit on fall. Click cover to see details and test drive this series at no charge!
It's fall-there's a nip in the air and it's a wonderful time to
investigate God's awesome beauty through nature, and discover its many "Autumn Treasures"! Each day, your student will explore and investigate, creating and adding more learning components to his Autumn Treasures lapbook-building
a wonderful reminder of all that he is learning. Even though these
studies have a great list of books that you can use to enrich your
study, they are not a requirement. There are science discoveries,
such as learning about the cause of seasons and how animals in the wild
use autumn to prepare for winter. Your student will learn history as he studies about the pumpkin in America, and how Johnny Appleseed helped pioneers spread across this great land.
The second is the TOS Holiday Digital Supplement. I did a craft project for this supplement, but was blown away by just how huge this issue is. I wasn't expecting nearly 200 pages of everything from freezer meal worksheets, to crafts, gift ideas, decor, recipes and so much more! This truly is a great resource.

Feel the Words
|
Here is a way to save $40 and have lots of fun at the
same time. This is a homemade version of the award winning The Touch Game.
Materials:
-Small objects from around the house (ex: toy
car, small doll, dice, lid, etc. )
- Bag (cloth works the best)
-Timer
-Paper with name of each object written on it (index
cards work great!)
Instructions:
Place the cards face down next to the bag. The
first player picks up a card, reads it and then tries to find the item in the bag
before the buzzer goes off, no peeking! For example if the card "pig"
is drawn, he must feel for the pig in the bag. Adjust the time allowed to the age of the children playing. If the child finds the correct object in the bag before the buzzer
goes off they get to keep the card and object. Whoever has the most at the end
of the game wins!
You can adapt this game in a variety of ways. One fun tweak would be to skip the cards and put seasonal items in the bag, letting your children guess what each item is as they feel it. When they correctly guess an item they pull it out. If they were right, they keep it. For fall you might use a plastic turkey, pilgrim hat, leaf, acorn, candy corn, etc.
Homemade games are a great learning tool and save you a TON of money.
