Gearing Up!

I don't know about you, but I'm in planning mode! The middle of July through August is when I do my major planning for the upcoming year. In fact, I just ordered our main curriculum this week. In this newsletter we provide you with some resources for adding fun to your standard curriculum. I've found if I plan ahead for fun, it's more likely to happen. If I don't, we end up just covering the basics. So check out some of the resources below and see if you can fit them into your plans for the coming year.

Speaking of curriculum....mine was SPENDY! How about yours? If you'd like to bring in  some extra $$ for curriculum or fun extras, and are a satisfied Trigger Memory customer, consider participating in our affiliate program. With a 25% commission, our program pays more than most and you get to promote a program you already know and love! They can even download our free trial before buying. If you'd like to become one of the affiliates we send regular checks to each month, check out our program details.

Visited PJ's All Day, lately?

Have you stopped by the blog this month? If you want a peek into our personal lives, this is the place to get to know us. Post last month include:

A video that inspired my boys to spend hours creating flip movies from index cards.

My trick for keeping my dining room table from becoming a dumping ground. C'mon, I'm not the only one with that problem, am I?

Umm....a link for a website that will let you know the best times to make a potty run during a movie.

In homemaking ideas, you'll find a great carrot cake recipe, menu planning tips, a frugal end table solution and see the treasures found in Jennie's wall!

I also posted a detailed review of SpellQuizzer spelling software, a program that I'm really impressed with. If you're looking at a new spelling program this year, give their 30 day free trial a shot. I'm actually using the software with AVKO spelling, just to help me save some time.

When is a book report not a book report? When it's fun! This site will give you 100 alternatives to the traditional book report.

Love games? How about making your own? Or assign the kids a game to create. These homemade game instructions will inspire you. And if you want to make a quality homemade game, consider using our blank game sets (great for reviewing concepts).

Looking for ways to make math more fun? Well, aside from the obvious (Times Tales, of course!) your child is sure to find something fun to do at Coolmath.com.

If you'll be working with a younger child this year, take a look at this extensive list of writing resources. Lots of good stuff here for Kindergarten age kids!
Take it Apart - Put it Back!

Jennie
: My eldest son loves to think up inventions. He has a notebook full of sketches and diagrams of the things he wants to invent. A very good activity for the engineer minded child is to let them take things apart and try to put them back again. I don't suggest letting them disassemble your microwave but you can get things such as transistor radios, toasters and clocks, very inexpensively at second hand stores. Before you start, make sure they have the right tools and safety precautions have been gone over. The learning possibilities are endless!

Dena: As a mechanic, my husband regularly has to either mentally or physically document the way a piece of machinery was assembled. This is an excellent skill to practice. Work with your child on how to organize the parts to help in re-assembly. Show them how to draw the order of the parts or even take digital pictures. (Yes, my husband has been known to come and steal my camera!)

Practice with Legos by offering your child a completed model. You keep the directions then have him/her take apart and re-assemble the creation. You can even take this a bit further by letting your children create their own projects, complete with instructions. Then, give the instructions to a parent or sibling and see if they are clear enough that the project can be re-created.

New Stuff!
We are pleased to announce a new addition to our store offerings. Please take a moment to check out The Young Man's Handybook and Marmee's Kitchen Primer. My son loves the Handybook and immediately asked to make the biscuits. Who doesn't love a man that can cook?! (Just ask Jennie, her husband is a chef!) The Handybook is chock full of all that "guy stuff" that every young man needs to know, from simple home repairs to bookkeeping 101. And Marmee's Kitchen  Primer will not only teach your daughter to cook, but how to make every day special.

And if you have a friend who hasn't yet taken advantage of our free Times Tales sample download and free Memory Trigger E-book, be sure and send them HERE!

We wish you the best in your homeschooling journey!

Sincerely,

Dena, Jennie & Marillee
