Lazy Days of Summer? Where?

 winter cabin

I don't know about you, but we haven't quite settled into the "lazy days of summer" around here yet. Between a trip to the FPEA Homeschool Convention in Florida, my son's wedding, his college graduation, my Grandma's funeral, the last few weeks have been very busy and involved a lot of travel. Then add in schooling, annual testing, chaperoning Scout Day Camp, church activities and well...just the duties of daily life, things have felt even more hectic than usual. After a trip to TN and Vacation Bible School next week, I'm hoping to relax and get back to my home projects in July.

Jennie has been busy re-designing our website and creating some fun Youtube videos for Times Tales. You can see them here and here.

In the hopes that your schedule has been less crazy than ours (or that you'll soon have some downtime as well) you'll find lots of fun ideas and activities and resources in this newsletter. Happy Summer!

pjheader

If you'd like to get to know us better, take a moment to visit our new blog at www.PJsallday.com. We cover home schooling, home business and homemaking . . . which really means, we just talk about our lives, as everything falls under ONE of those categories, right?!

For instance, in "homemaking" you can see Jennie's amazingly cheap kitchen cabinet makeover,Then check out "homeschooling" to find 12 sneaky, educational ideas for summer fun. And in "home business" you'll find out who we are, and a bit about our products.

Homemaker Journey

Other posts interesting posts out this month include how to make a  Build a Word Game, some fun with Paper Mache, and the oldest of our thirteen children (between the three of us) graduating college and getting married. (See, it really does go by quickly!)

We hope you'll become a regular visitor to PJsallday.com and hope to read your comments and get to know you better. You won't want to miss the rest of Jennie's amazing kitchen makeover. It truly is an awesome (and bargain!) transformation.
Web Resources

Here is a fun site for making your own games. It even includes the Black Line Masters.

I just LOVE the Crafty Crow website. She even has some great ideas for projects you could do for Father's Day. Well...if you hurry, that is! Be sure and check out her links on the right. For instance, under the "camping" link I found Glow in the Dark Rocks, a fun lantern to make (find the little lights at the Dollar Store), practical ways to reuse mint tins and lots more. Oh yes! I also love this visual packing guide. I could see making a master of this without the numbers, then adding the numbers as your child packs for each trip. If they don't need a sweatshirt for a summer trip to Grandma's, just put zero.

Do you have a child learning to type? They might enjoy Dance Mat Typing or Free Typing Games.

Will you be taking some road trips this summer? Consider downloading some audio files from My Audio School. Lots of good stuff here.
Fun Weight Estimation Game!

scales
Have you ever guessed at how much something weighs and found you were WAY off? Well, here is a quick and fun way to teach children to better estimate weight.

All you need is a small household scale (postal or kitchen scales work well), some paper, and some energetic children. The parent begins by writing on small pieces of paper five or six different weights within the weight limits of your particular scale.

The parent then folds the papers up and puts them in a bowl or basket. The first child draws one piece of paper from the basket. The children are then sent on a scavenger hunt around the house for an item they think weighs approximately the amount on the paper. Once they all return, each child takes a turn weighing the item they found. The one who is the closest to the chosen weight gets to draw the next piece of paper (or you can offer another small reward), after they put their items back of course.

Mnemonic of the Month - Reader Favorites

We've continued to receive favorite reader's mnemonics that I'm happy to share here. Don't forget to share yours!

Here is one my daughter, Alison, uses to remember the order of the planets in our solar system.
My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.
Of course, now they are telling us Pluto is not a planet after all.  Change that to
My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nachos. :o)
Sally

And for the metric system:

When I was in elementary school (fifth grade to be precise), my teacher wrote this on the blackboard:

King Henry Died of Malaria During the Century of Madness.

Over the years (decades, ha!) that silly sentence has helped me remember metric units readily.  "Malaria" stand for  "meter". In my mind, it can also stand for " liter" or "gram".  Or one could say he died of "Lying" or "Germs" or something.

kilometer
hectometer
dekameter
meter  (liter, gram)
decimeter
centimeter
millimeter

Warmly and in His grace,
Miiko

New Stuff!
We are pleased to announce a new addition to our store offerings. Please take a moment to check out The Young Man's Handybook and Marmee's Kitchen Primer. My son loves the Handybook and immediately asked to make the biscuits. Who doesn't love a man that can cook?! (Just ask Jennie, her husband is a chef!) The Handybook is chock full of all that "guy stuff" that every young man needs to know, from simple home repairs to bookkeeping 101. And Marmee's Kitchen  Primer will not only teach your daughter to cook, but how to make every day special.

And if you have a friend who hasn't yet taken advantage of our free Times Tales sample download and free Memory Trigger E-book, be sure and send them HERE!

We wish you the best in your homeschooling journey!

Sincerely,
