| Family Newspaper

We were a bit stumped about what to do for Grandparent gifts this year when my father insisted that he didn't want us to purchase anything for him, however, he'd love something made by the kids.
We wanted to come up with something more creative than a card or craft and finally decided to send out "gift subscriptions" to The Wood Times, our new family newspaper. The subscription notice was sent along with the first issue.
My sixth grader lays the paper out into a Word newsletter template and it looks quite official. We include photos and articles about the family goings-on for the month. My youngest dictates his article to me and my eight year old had a great time drawing the cartoon for the issue. We even included a couple of classified ads for fun.
FREE: 7 ft tall Christmas tree. Available Dec. 26th.
This is a great project for the kids to practice writing and editing. It has made them more aware of local happenings (they wanted to be sure we got a photo of the building that collapsed under snow on Main Street, for our paper) and of newspaper layout in general.
This is one of those fun ways to sneak "school" in so the kids don't even know it's happening. And the Grandparents love it as well!

Happy New Year!
We're off and running in a brand new year. Though I know it's "just another day" I always enjoy the opportunity for a fresh start and New Years is no exception. If you haven't made any resolutions or contemplated change in your homeschool for 2009, it's not too late. Take some time this month to contemplate what's working and what's not. Is there any way to incorporate more of what is? Can you make adjustments to what is not? consider incorporating one fun, simple change you could make in your homeschool that would make the rest of the year more fun. Ideas might be a weekly game day, family hike, art day, baking or sewing lessons with Mom (yes, for boys, too) or just making time to fit in that favorite subject that gets set aside.
Speaking of fun, one thing that makes learning multiplication facts more fun is Times Tales! If you're not a current user of our program, be sure and use the code NLFREEFLIP to recieve our Mini Flip free when you buy a Times Tales with Mini Flip.
Happy Homeschooling!

The Inauguration
|
|
It's not too late to share a bit about the Presidential Inauguration with your children. In our home, we've set aside last week and this, to do just that. Here are a few last-minute resources to help you, should you decide to join us.
First, if you're like us and don't have television, you can watch the Inauguration in real-time on Charter.net at this link.
The schedule is as follows:
9am St Johns Church Service 10am Coffee with President Bush 10:30 Travel to Capitol Hill 11:30 Inauguration service begins 12 noon Swearing in 12:30 Bush document signing 1 Congressional lunch 2:15 Review of troops at North Front Capitol 2:30 Parade begins, followed by Inaugural balls
I'm assuming this is eastern time.
This Inaugural website offers loads of information on the upcoming ceremony. You'll learn about the 2009 theme, "A New Birth of Freedom," commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, read a bit about Lincoln, read excerpts of The Gettysburg Address and see the Lincoln Memorial. Click HERE to read the luncheon menu and view the picture that will hang in Statuary Hall during the luncheon (and learn why). You can even download recipes! While there, take a peek at the gifts, china and flowers as well. Click HERE to see the history behind the Inauguration. Watch video clips of former presidents, walk through a typical day and read a list of Famous Facts and Firsts.Do you know who set the precedent of including the phrase, "So help me God" and kissing the Bible after taking the oath? During which Inaugural parade were Afircan Americans allowed to participate for the first time?
My children enjoyed spending a good bit of time exploring the White House Kids website. They especially enjoyed reading about the White House pets and perusing the short bios of each president. You can take a video tour of the White House with President Bush, who offers lots of fun, personal informational tidbits.
