Fall Is In The Air!

One of the best things about homeschooling is it's flexibility. It's so fun to be able to incorporate a study on the elections or natural disasters, or whatever is personally relevant to you. We are free to bend our schooling to our children's interests as we deem fit.
This issue we are going to share some of our favorite Fall activites as well as provide you with some great links to spice up those chilly afternoons.
Happy Homeschooling!

| From Marillee: Easy Apple Crisp |
|

Since we have had an abundance of apples this year the girls and I decided to search for a simple, but delicious apple crisp recipe. Here is one we found that has been a winner with our family and guests this fall. Ingredients: 3 1/2 lbs. apples (peeled, 3 packets instant maple cored & sliced) & brown sugar oatmeal 1/2 cup butter 1 pinch salt 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup all purpose flour 1/4 cup maple syrup Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Place apples in a 9X13 inch baking dish. In a bowl, cream together butter & sugar. Stir in flour, instant oatmeal & salt. Fold in walnuts. Sprinkle oatmeal mixture evenly over apples. Drizzle with maple syrup. 3. Bake for 50 to 70 minutes, until apples are tender and topping is golden.
Tip: We just use homemade syrup and the instant oatmeal that has pecans already in it. We enjoy it right out of the oven with vanilla ice cream .

| Jennie: My Cartoon Family |

A few years back I started making these cartoon fridge magnets and they were a big hit! This is a fun, hands-on project that can be enjoyed for years to come. These would make great take-home place cards for your Thanksgiving dinner! Or let your children make a set for their cousins or grandparents. Everyone will love them.
Materials:
-Children's illustrated book (one you are willing to cut up)
-Peel & stick magnets (either the business card size or the larger magnet sheets you can buy in craft stores)
-A photo or computer printed head shot about the size of a quarter.
-Modge Podge
The first step is to find an interesting "body" in your book. I look for illustrations that show activity; jumping, holding something up, etc. I found some chef illustrations that were perfect for my chef husband.
Next, cut around body part of the picture, leaving the head part off. Then, cut the head portion of your photo off, leaving some of the neck. Line up the head with the body on the peel and stick BEFORE pulling the peel off to make sure it will fit. Once you're comfortable it fits, pull the wax paper off and stick the head and body to the sticky side of the magnet. Next, cut around entire head and body. The last thing is to use a glossy finish such as Modge Podge to protect the magnets. Kids love to move "mommy the cartoon" around the fridge much more than the "call 911" magnet, so these need to hold up. I usually give them 2-3 coats for further durability. Voila, you have animated your family!

This site offers some neat Bible printables. For instance, we are using Mystery of History and are currently following Moses he left Egypt. This lesson includes a full color 3-D printable map showing the Canaan to Exodus travels. Foldable markers point to significant events along the way.If you scroll down a bit on the main page to Activity 205, you'll find a printable for making 10 Plagues Die to use with a Plagues of Egypt Bingo Game. These resources would be great for home or even teaching Sunday School.
