Believe it or not, Christmas is just around the corner. Are your children as excited as mine? I finally broke down and made a paper countdown chain for my six year old in an attempt to put an end to the "how many more days..." question.
We know you're all busy and will keep this issue short and sweet. Still, we do have some great resources and ideas to help you keep in touch with the 'reason for the season' over the next couple of weeks.
Happy Homeschooling!

What?! No 'School'?!
It has been my experience that, in the general public, the word "school" is used most often used as a noun, identifying a specific building. However, in the homeschooling community, the word often takes on meaning as a verb, or at least an adverb. "We're going to be doing school soon." "You can watch a video after we do school?" or even, "Is this school?" (I love that one! It's great when they're not sure, isn't it?)
I don't have a problem with this terminology and use it often, however, it is more an unthinking habit than a philosophy. I'm willing to bet that's the case with most of you. While you may, indeed, "do school" we know that our ultimate goal is the 'education' of our children. An undertaking that involves much more than 'school'. 'Education' involves, among other things, the character, morals, work ethic, spirit and motivation of our children and reaches far beyond book learning or 'school'.
As things tend to get hectic these next few weeks, don't feel guilty or stress if you choose to take some time away from 'school'. You can still use that time to 'educate'. Bond as a family while you participate in traditions that will be passed down to future generations. Delve deeply into the biblical history of Christmas. Minister to those in need, both physically and emotionally. There are many, many ways to 'educate' your children even if you take a bit of time off 'school' in the process.
There will be plenty of time, come January, to get back on track and "do school". |
