A note from Peter...

peter new pic

I don't know what it is about maple syrup, but for me, it is the tears of angels.  When we lived in Rhode Island, my road trip fantasy was a weekend visiting sugar shacks in Vermont.  It never happened.  Now when relatives visit, they know they must bring a quart of Grade A Dark Amber if they are to stay with me.  Come indulge your maple syrup jones at our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, next Tuesday night, February 21 from 5 pm through 8 pm.  The Brotherhood will be flipping flapjacks and frying sausage for insanely low prices.  To get tickets, pray.  Then call the church office, or better yet, just come to services this Sunday and get a discount.  Pancakes are good.  Pancakes with maple syrup are exponentially better.

Lent Booklets at SMC

For this Lenten season, we are providing two booklets for SMC parishioners.
Meditation Booklet - Over 40 parishioners have contributed short meditations to guide our devotions all season long. Each page has the readings from the day, a meditation, and information about the SMC author.
Family Booklets are also available. Titled "Transforming the World Trhough a Season of Compassion," the booklet contains seven weeks of activities to do during Lent, a simple action per day.
Look for both booklets in church on Sunday.

Adult Forums for Lent

Our Sunday morning Adult Forums return in the parish hall at 10:15 a.m. and all will focus on our Lenten theme centered around the characteristics of compassion.

Feb. 26 - Mercy - Speaker:  Parish Nurse Pat Hall and lay volunteers

March11 - Gentleness - Speaker:  Broadneck High School psychologist Dr. Margaret Cannon

March 18 - Justice - Speaker:  Mary Davisson, director of Baltimore Seafarer Institute

March 25 - Openness - Speakers:  A panel comprised of greeters and newcomer team members with the Rector.

Messiah Class Resumes

Stewart will resume his study of Handel's Messiah on Monday mornings, from Feb. 27-April 2, with parts II & III that focus on Lenten and Easter. The class begins at 10 a.m. in the conference room. James will join in on the discussion as well. All are welcome. Contact the office if you wish to participate.

Rector's Class for Lent

Please make plans to join the Rector for his Wednesday night Lenten series featuring Marcus Borg's newest title "Speaking Christian."  We will discuss the power that Christian language contains, as well as how that power has changed through the years and what we have lost because of it.  This is a timely topic for Lent with its themes of God's will and suffering examined through the lens of scripture, reason and experience.  The sessions will begin with potluck suppers at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8:15 p.m. with Compline.  It is not necessary to read the book to participate in the class, but certainly helpful.

Centering Prayer Workshop with Bishop Eugene Sutton

Do you find God in the silence?  Is your spirit fed by stillness and meditation?  Start your Lent off with compassion for yourself and

register for a centering prayer workshop led by the Rt. Rev. Eugene Sutton at Church of the Ascension in Westminster, MD on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m  Registration closes on Feb. 22.  Please contact St. Margaret's parishioner and attendee Judi Tanner for more information or to arrange carpools.

J2A Youth
Recycling Program

The SMC Youth is collecting used printer cartridges, cell phones, and other small electronics for a recycling fundraiser to support the J2A pilgrimage. Look for collection boxes in the narthex, the parish hall, and the administrative office. (Cords and straps need to be removed.)

Congratulations to Aubrey & Ryan Swinson on the birth of son Crawford on Tuesday!
