Celebrating the Life of Larry Heacock
St. Margaret's parishioner Larry Heacock passed away on Saturday evening. We will celebrate his life this Saturday at 11 a.m. in the church with a reception following in the parish hall.
We expect there to be many attendees, so if possible, please consider carpooling. We might need assistance with parking, so please call the office if you are willing to help.
Donations of cheese & crackers, chips & dip, desserts, or fruit platters would be appreciated. If you wish to bring food, please contact Dibble Hammar at 410-757-0432 or dhammar@gmail.com.
If you are able to help with setting up the hall, serving, or cleaning up the hall afterwards, please contact Pat Hall at 410-956-5120 or pshall1@verizon.net. It will take a lot of hands to be able host a gathering of this size and the Heacock family will be very appreciative of your help.
Please keep his wife Nancy and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord:
And let light perpetual shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

A note from James...
This Sunday at 4 p.m. in the church, tenor Byron Jones and pianist Michael Adcock will present four performances of Schubert's monumental cycle Winterreise, to poems of Wilhelm Müller. Written in 1827 near the end of Schubert's life, the cycle traces a poignant journey from youthful heartbreak to the nostalgia of a mature and reflective man. This work is so demanding of performers that it is rarely done in full. This is a chance to hear it wonderfully performed by two of our region's finest artists.
This concert is actually the 2nd annual Judith W. Meeder Memorial Concert.
When I first came to St. Margaret's Church in 2004, one of the first people to greet me was Judy Meeder. She thanked me for my organ playing and offered to help in any way possible. "I would sing with the choir, but my voice doesn't always blend well," she confided. I had no idea what she meant until a few weeks had passed and Judy asked if she and I might get together as singer and accompanist. I came into our first musical meeting with no idea of her voice and sat down at the keyboard where she placed a piece of Leonard Bernstein's music. I hit the first chord. Judy opened her mouth and the most glorious, rich, and powerful sound came forth. I was in heaven. We sang through all sorts of songs that day and I knew that I would rarely ever get to accompany a more joyous or expressive singer or as fine a musician as her. It took me forever to get out of her that she had studied with the great Rosa Ponselle, had sung professionally in New York, Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington, DC. It wasn't that she wasn't proud of her accomplishments. It was that she preferred to live in the here and now.
Judy informed me that she, her daughter Laurie, and several other fine musicians in the area had given a fund raising concert at St. Margaret's to begin a concert series at the church. Unfortunately, the funds raised that day were still sitting in a bank account waiting to be used. I pledged to her that we would start up the concert series. With great help from many in this church, we established a wonderful series of free concerts for our community starting in 2006.
Now my dear friend and colleague Byron Jones brings one of the towering works of vocal music to St. Margaret's with the complete Winterreise of Schubert. I like to think of it as the Tri-athalon of singing. It requires endurance and technique of the highest degree, but most of all it requires a great deal of heart to deliver. Again, a perfect way to remember our dear friend Judy.
--James

Lent - A Season of Compassion
Lent begins on February 22, Ash Wednesday. For the six weeks following and leading up to Holy Week and Easter, we will feature themes of compassion during this usually penitent and somber season. Our Adult Forums and weekly podcasts will reflect on different aspects of compassion as exercised in life and ministry. Adult formation opportunities will take place on both Monday morning and Wednesday evening, and our Holy Week will feature daily Eucharists, a Seder meal on Thursday and a very special Good Friday experience. All this leads up to Easter Sunday, April 8.

Rector's Class for Lent
Please make plans to join the Rector for his Wednesday night Lenten series featuring Marcus Borg's newest title "Speaking Christian." We will discuss the power that Christian language contains, as well as how that power has changed through the years and what we have lost because of it. This is a timely topic for Lent with its themes of God's will and suffering examined through the lens of scripture, reason and experience. The sessions will begin with potluck suppers at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8:15 p.m. with Compline. It is not necessary to read the book to participate in the class, but certainly helpful.
