February 1,  2012

A note from Stewart..  stewart

When you type 'prayer' into Wikipedia, this is the first sentence you get: "Prayer, anglicized from Latin precatio, is a form of religious practice that seeks to activate a volitional rapport to a deity through deliberate communication."

Those big words kind of made me chuckle. More simply I think of prayer as my intentional communication with God, when I remember to do it or when I remember to notice that I have in fact been in a state of prayer all day long. I used to think that words humbly strung together in eloquent phrases were necessary to get God's attention. I'm over that now, and usually my prayers are simply one word exclamations like: Argh! Help! Thanks! or my favorite, Whatever!?

I pray a lot in the car and when I'm working in the garden. I can get into prayerful moments in conversations with other people on the journey of faith with me and even on Facebook. This week I've had a lot of prayer requests. That is a joy and burden of this priestly calling -  holding things in prayer for people, sometimes in confidence. On Sundays I look out from my chair near the altar at all of your faces, and I'm easily overwhelmed with emotions ranging from joy to great sorrow. It is why we come here - to be with others on the journey in community.

So I have a question for you. How is your prayer life going?

And I have a request of you.

Pray for those in our community and let us know what prayer requests you have. Email those requests to info@st-margarets.org. We pray for those on our urgent needs list during the prayers of the people on Sunday. Others remain on our long-term prayer list or for those serving in our armed forces. If you would like to join our prayer chain, please contact Shelby Pritzlaff.

Know that the staff has you in our daily prayers.

      Come & See

    Feb. 1 & 4

Join the Rev. Peter Mayer in downtown Annapolis for "Come and See" on this evening at 7:00 PM or Saturday morning, February 4 at 11:00 AM.  Meet at the Alex Haley Memorial at City Dock.  We will gather and talk briefly about the things Jesus did, and the things he taught his disciples to do.  Then we will disperse by foot to go and see the world around us through God's eyes.  We will then return and talk about the things we experienced.  This promises to be a fun and exciting formation experience, showing us things about God that we might need to see.  Please call Laura at (410)974-0200 TODAY to sign up-we don't want to leave anyone behind.

J2A Chilli Cookoff -

Thanks for your support!

The 2nd Annual J2A Chili Cookoff was a rousing success last Saturday evening, with over a dozen chili recipes to taste and almost 100 tasters. The J2A pilgrimage earned almost $700 for their pilgrimage, including proceeds from the football jersey raffle. The 2012 Grand Champion is Amanda Freeland and her "White Bean Chicken Chili," which was also tops in the Healthy Alternative category. Leading the Family Style category was John Pedersen and his "John's Chili Internationale." The winning Spicy Hot Mama chili was made by Allison Mayer with her "Asian-Inspired Chili." Our thanks to all of the cooks, tasters, eaters, and "event staff" who made this a memorable evening.

Judith Meeder Memorial Concert on Feb. 12

Tenor Byron Jones and pianist Michael Adcock will present four performances of Schubert's monumental cycle Winterreise, to poems of Wilhelm Müller for the upcoming second annual Judith W. Meeder Memorial Concert. Written in 1827 near the end of Schubert's life, the cycle traces a poignant journey from youthful heartbreak to the nostalgia of a mature and reflective man. This work is so demanding of performers that it is rarely done in full. This is a chance to hear it wonderfully performed by two of our region's finest artists on Sunday, February 12, at 4 p.m. in the Church.

Lent begins on February 22, Ash Wednesday.  For the six weeks following and leading up to Holy Week and Easter, we will feature themes of compassion during this usually penitent and somber season.  Our Adult Forums and weekly podcasts will reflect on different aspects of compassion as exercised in life and ministry.  Adult formation opportunities will take place on both Monday morning and Wednesday evening, and our Holy Week will feature daily Eucharists, a Seder meal on Thursday and a very special Good Friday experience.  All this leads up to Easter Sunday, April 8.  Please look for more news on Lent: A Season of Compassion in next month's Spire, as well as future bulletins and Dragontales.

Scout Sunday - Feb. 19

If you are a youth or adult actively involved in Scouting, please make plans to attend the 9 a.m. service on February 19 in uniform and potentially assist with ushering or readings. More information will be available in future editions of Dragon Tales and in the Sunday School classes.

Giving for H.O.P.E.  -

UPDATE

As 2012 begins, there has been no let up in the needs of county residents for Project H.O.P.E.  Based on their last year's numbers of families and the first month of Jan. 2012, the need is greater than ever. Due to the large number of clothing requests for school-age children and their families, they are very low on winter sweat pants, sweat shirts, long pants and jeans, hooded sweats, and winter jackets in both adult and children's sizes. They also need infant sizes 0 to 18 months and children's clothes from 24 months to 6 T. The giving box is in the narthex of the church. Thank you for your continued generosity.

J2A Youth
Recycling Program

Sign Up for Spring Foyers

Patterned after a concept developed at Coventry Cathedral in England, Foyers are small informal groups that gather in members' homes to share a meal and conversation, allowing participants to get to know other parishioners.  Here at St Margaret's we have two active Foyers programs:

  • Adult Foyers - Small groups of 6-8 people, both singles and couples, meet for three or four lunches or dinners between March and October.
  • Family Foyers - A group for families who would like to include their children and meet for lunches, picnics, or dinners and also meet between March and October.

For more information or to register for the adult Foyers Group, please contact:  Susan Roberts at  410-573-1581 roberts.susan1948@gmail.com or  by Feb 12.

For more information or to register for the Family Foyers Group, please contact:  Tricia Shilling at mdbucks@msn.com or 410-757-5996 by Feb 12.

If you cannot continue in Foyers this year, please let us know so we can remove your name from the list.
