A Note from James...

Though grief does not always wait until one is older, the enormity of losing loved ones usually increases exponentially with age.  With each new loss an increasing awareness of previous losses grows.  Grief becomes a constant companion and a way of life. Memories of the past flow unbidden into our minds and suddenly we spend days living with ghosts of our pasts, warm recollections, sad regrets, tender joys, and resignation at the shortness of life.

None of us are immune from grief, but we at St. Margaret's Church have a great source of comfort and strength in dealing with loss.  From our intercessory prayer group to bereavement support groups to our Parish Nurse program, St. Margaret's offers many ways to access spiritual healing and comfort during times of loss. Additionally, we have two special services this week that acknowledge the sorrow we feel at losing our loved ones, but also provide a way to celebrate the joys of our shared time together and the joys of the life hereafter.

Tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the church, we will gather for a special All Souls observance with Holy Eucharist.  This quiet and reflective service, with special candle lighting and contemplative music, provides an opportunity to remember those who have gone before and experience the mystical communion of saints with bread and wine.

The more celebratory and joyous aspects of life eternal and the heavenly Kingdom will be part and parcel of our annual Dixieland Mass at the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services on Sunday, November 6. The Peabody Ragtime Ensemble will be on hand to accompany the singing and help us re-create the joy of a New Orleans post-funeral procession extolling the joys of heaven and the welcoming of the Saints.

Giving is a
Spiritual Practice

St. Margaret's is a faith community dedicated to the spiritual growth of its members.  As a body, we recognize that giving of our time and talent in support of others nourishes our soul.  For that reason, St. Margaret's recognizes giving as an exercise in faith and devotion to Christ that enriches the life of both those who give and those who receive. This year, your Stewardship Commission, vestry, wardens and clergy invite you to think about stewardship in a new way. Once you have received your Stewardship commitment letter, we invite you to think about how becoming a cheerful giver to everyone you meet could transform your life, filling it with joy, peace, and gratitude.

If you have not yet received your Stewardship letter including a Commitment card and envelope, please pick up one in the narthex, print one online, or call the church office (410-974-0200). If you received offering envelopes this year, we will provide them again for you. If you would like to give online, or if you need envelopes, please contact Ruth in the office.

*Pledged amount (as of 11/01/11) with 82 pledges:  $385,457. *

Day School Food Drive

The Lighthouse Shelter recently sent a note of thanks to both the Day School and the St. Margaret's Church family for their recent donations for the school's annual food drive.  Over 70 bags of groceries were collected and delivered to the shelter. In addition, the congregation has donated 451 bags this year to date.

Thanksgiving Baskets

Members of our parish will provide holiday meals to needy families or seniors this Thanksgiving. We will receive names of those to receive our gifts from the AA Co. Dept. of Social Services. The Mission Commission will provide the turkeys, you and your family will provide the fixings for the rest of the meal and deliver the basket to the recipient a few days BEFORE Thanksgiving Day. No cooking involved. Turkeys and baskets will be available at the church on Sunday, Nov. 20 or by separate arrangement. To participate or for questions, contact Barbara Marder at 410-518-9978 or email scubaesc@aol.com

 Exploring Missions

for Our Youth

The youth of St. Margaret's are invited to discover more about Diocesan mission trips for next year and have a Honduras Reunion for those who went in 2011. The youth group will gather on Sunday at 2:45 p.m. at the church and travel up to  St. David's Church, 4700 Roland Ave. in Baltimore. Return time is 7 p.m. The evening includes a beans and tortillas dinner. Come and join with fellow missioners for fellowship and fun as we remember 2011 and plan for 2012. This is also a great time to bring friends or others who might be interested in going on a mission trip to come and learn about details.

 Giving for H.O.P.E.

We had such success with our request for hats and mittens for the H.O.P.E. program (see this month's Newsletter, page 10) that we have a new call for current needs: children's clothes (fall and winter), winter coats, and blankets. Look for the H.O.P.E. box in the narthex.  Hopefully we can fill it up many times over and deliver it to our friend Leo Zerhusen  in Glen Burnie on Saturday, Nov. 12.  For questions, call Arvilla at 410-757-6199
