A Note from Peter...
What a glorious Sunday we enjoyed last week with the Bishop! It took about half of our weekly staff meeting to talk about how many things went right: from the set-up, to all the lay servers, to all the positive things that Bp. Sutton said to our vestry.
But then something changed. It was brought up that our office this month has been inundated with phone calls seeking help for rent, bills, and food. From June through September, we received 19 calls for help. In October alone, we have received 31 calls. We talked about the interruptions and the distraction that these phone calls have become. Writing checks to Baltimore Gas and Electric for $25 and sending out grocery cards takes time away from other tasks like writing sermons, and planning liturgies. Finally, one wise staff member said "isn't this what we're supposed to be doing?"
Sometimes I fall into the trap of thinking that we do church for the pageantry, for the words, for the music. For ourselves. But at times like this, I am reminded that we are at our best when we do church for others. The bulletins, the sermons, the albs, the flowers are not objects of worship in and of themselves. They must point to something. All that we do in this enterprise of worship has to point to the glory of God, or else it is emptied of meaning. When we do church for others, we find ourselves serving God by serving those who are on the outside.

Giving is a Spiritual Practice St. Margaret's is a faith community dedicated to the spiritual growth of its members. As a body, we recognize that giving of our time and talent in support of others nourishes our soul. For that reason, St. Margaret's recognizes giving as an exercise in faith and devotion to Christ that enriches the life of both those who give and those who receive. This year, your Stewardship Commission, vestry, wardens and clergy invite you to think about stewardship in a new way. Once you have received your Stewardship commitment letter, we invite you to think about how becoming a cheerful giver to everyone you meet could transform your life, filling it with joy, peace, and gratitude.
If you have not yet received your Stewardship letter including a Commitment card and envelope, please pick up one in the narthex, print one online, or call the church office (410-974-0200). If you received offering envelopes this year, we will provide them again for you. If you would like to give online, or if you need envelopes, please contact Ruth in the office.
*Pledged amount (as of 10/26/11) with 37 pledges: $178,560. * We are hoping to receive the majority of pledges by Oct. 30 when we will celebrate and bless our common commitment to St. Margaret's. |
"Pink Smoke Over the Vatican" Tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 26, "Pink Smoke Over the Vatican," a one-hour documentary on women's historical participation in the church, will be screened at 7 p.m. in the parish hall. Father Roy Bourgeois, a Maryknoll priest who has supported the ordinations of Roman Catholic women, is featured as well as Bishop Patricia Fresen, a former Dominican nun asked to leave her order when she became ordained as a priest in the "Roman Catholic Women Priests" (RCWP) movement. After the showing of the film, Andrea Johnson, who serves as RCWP bishop for the eastern region of RCWP-USA, will lead a discussion of the film for another hour. |
Sunday Adult Forum: Honduras Trip On Sunday, Oct. 30, members of our youth will share pictures and stories from their summer mission trip to Honduras. Please come support them and have a cup of coffee at 10:15am in the parish hall. |
Flu Shots - October 30 The flu vaccine will be offered in the parish hall this Sunday at 10:15am. The fee will be $25 for all persons not on Medicare; receipts of payment will be available for those who request them. Medicare recipients need to bring their cards for verification of benefits. Call Pat Hall @ 410-956-5120 to request a home visit for anyone that may be homebound. |
All Souls Service of Holy Eucharist
Wednesday, November 2 at 7 pm While All Saints' Day is to remember all the saints, popular piety felt the need to distinguish between outstanding saints and those who are unknown in the wider fellowship of the church, especially family members and friends. The day is also referred to as the Commemoration of All Faithful Departed. This will be a quiet service with some reflective music, a meditation and a time to remember those who have died especially in the last year. If you have a name you would like to be read at this service or printed for our All Saints' Sunday service, please email laura@st-margarets.org by Mon., Oct. 31. |
All Saints' Sunday November 6 at 9:00 & 11:15am
Bring your neighbors and friends as we celebrate this feast day in the church. At the 9:00am service we will also welcome Owen Patrick McClelland and Emily Rose Owens into the household of God.

Welcome New Members
We had an incredible Sunday celebration with Bishop Sutton as we welcomed 9 new members into the Episcopal Church. Many thanks to all who made the day so special. Our coffee hour feast was scrumptious and beautiful, and the vestry enjoyed a terrific lunch with the Bishop after the services. We also collected $671 to be given to the Bishop's Discretionary Fund.

St. Margaret's Guild Nov. Meeting Our St. Margaret's Guild will be meeting on Wed., Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. in the parish hall. We're delighted to have as our guest speaker one of our own parishioners, Bob Baltz, who is a volunteer naturalist with Scales & Tales, an environmental education program of the MD Park Service. To emphasize promotion of wildlife stewardship, Bob will bring (non-releasable) birds of prey and reptiles. Along with all women (and men, too!) of the church, our day school children are also invited for this live wildlife program. Delicious refreshments will be served! |

Thanksgiving Baskets
Members of our parish will provide holiday meals to needy families or seniors this Thanksgiving. We will receive names of those to receive our gifts from the AA Co. Dept. of Social Services. The Mission Commission will provide the turkeys, you and your family will provide the fixings for the rest of the meal and deliver the basket to the recipient a few days BEFORE Thanksgiving Day. No cooking involved. Turkeys and baskets will be available at the church on Sunday, Nov. 20 or by separate arrangement. To participate or for questions, contact Barbara Marder at 410-518-9978 or email scubaesc@aol.com.
