Holy Cow!  Is that Covered?

Adjusters, especially in rural areas, often encounter unusual claims, sometimes involving animals. Collisions with deer, cattle, birds, even bears, are not unusual. The standard Personal Auto Policy Part D - Coverage for Damage to Your Auto - provides coverage for "Other than 'collision' only if the Declarations indicate that Other than Collision Coverage is provided for that auto."

The policy further lists losses that are not considered as collision, including missiles, falling objects such as tree limbs, fire, theft, explosion, windstorm, a few other items and "contact with bird or animal." Contact is not defined, but insureds can usually come up with examples, from damage to a car from hitting a pedestrian to having the auto infested with honeybees.
In June of 2006 National Underwriter published an article on animal-related auto claims reported by adjusters and agents. One insured's vehicle was attacked by a herd of buffalo while driving through a wild animal safari when the people in the car ahead had been feeding the herd and the insured had nothing to offer them. Another insured, a geologist, stopped in a field to obtain rock samples. While he was chipping at the rocks a group of curious cows gathered around his parked car and were rubbing against it, kicking it, and biting it, causing dents and scratches.
Another auto owner had been fishing near the ocean, and parked near a stream to do a bit more fishing. He returned to find a group of cattle munching on his windshield wiper blades and the rubber seals around the windows, and licking other parts of the car. It seems that the cows had discovered salty residue from the ocean and were sucking it off the vehicle to spice up their cud. The insured complained that his car "was covered with gooey slobber, the paint was ruined, and all the windows were jangling as he rode along because there was no rubber to hold them in place."
Crawford Educational Services teaches adjusters and appraisers about a wide variety of loss causes, including how to assess the resulting damages, what losses are covered, and which may be excluded. Whether the insured's auto was involved in a multi-vehicle wreck or eaten by a salt-crazed cow, Crawford-trained claims staff will be ready to handle the claim in accordance with the policy terms.
