The NYC MTA bus system has undergone quite a few changes in the last four months. So if you ride the bus, or drive in the bus lane, here is what you need to know:
The Select Bus Service routes on 1st and 2nd Avenues, started in October 2010, were supposed to deliver 20% faster service with on-street payment and restricted bus lanes. The first set of results is in and it's good news for bus travelers, with the MTA reporting increases in travel speed up to 19%.
What does the new Select Bus Service mean for vehicles driving in the Bus Lanes?
Most of the Bus Lanes are restricted lanes, which means you cannot drive in them unless you're making an immediate right turn or are dropping off a passenger. if you're caught, the fine is up to $150.
In 2010, the M34 was the 6th slowest bus, traveling at an average speed of 4.4 mph even though the buses have a dedicated 'bus lane'. This summer the MTA plans to convert the M34 route to off-board (on-street) payment, just like the 1st and 2nd Ave Select Bus Service. There are already dedicated bus lanes on 34th St and the MTA is proposing installing barricades to separate these lanes. Some of our parking garage partners are concerned that drivers won't cross the barricade to go into the garage. Will you?

HELP! THE PARKING METER WAS FROZEN AND I GOT A TICKET! |
 |
We got a frantic email from one of our readers that had gotten a parking ticket at a meter last week, right in the middle of NYC's wondrous snow and ice storm. She had tried to put a quarter into the meter, but it was frozen solid.
We asked our fabulous experts at New York Parking Ticket for help, and they got back to us within minutes:
 |
If you got a meter ticket on February 1, you win. |
 |
If you got a meter ticket on February 2, your best bet is to claim a "broken" meter. In a perfect world, you would have reported the meter to 311 when you parked. |
If you didn't report the meter as broken, maybe someone else did. Or, you can report it now, by taking the meter information from the parking ticket. Otherwise, you may wish to apply for a reduced fine.
If you have any kind of parking ticket, call the experts New York Parking Ticket.
