If you drive an SUV or an oversized vehicle, you know that nearly 90% of all garage charges an extra $10 - $11 to park your SUV. Why? Garage operators told us that not only do the oversized vehicles take up more room, but that it can take the valets longer to park a bigger car.

It’s a good thing we know the tricks of the trade. Here are two ways for you to avoid this surcharge:

Park at a self-park garage. There are only 21 in Manhattan, and one of our favorites is the underground garage at Lincoln Center. They have some fabulous deals so it's perfect for a midday lunch or meeting in midtown. $13 – enter by 10am, exit by 6pm. It’s $1.63 an hour! $26* – Mon through Fri on non-matinee days, exit by 6pm $31* – Sun through Fri, matinee days, exit by 6pm $32* – Sat, matinee days, exit by 6pm You can make an online reservation to secure your space for just an extra $5, and be sure to check the Lincoln Center site to see if it’s a matinee day. Once you’re safely parked, just hop on the going downtown and then from Columbus Circle you can connect to the or to go anywhere! * you need to park before 4pm for this rate
