Can You Use a Muni-Meter Receipt in Two Different Spaces?

Greetings!

We found out some great news about using Muni-Meters! Since Muni-Meter spaces on city streets don’t specify a particular location where you have to park, you can pay for time at one meter and use it on any other street in the city with muni-meter parking. One caveat though: this only applies to street parking and not muni-meter lots or garages.

Muni-Meters may accept credit cards, coins, or the NYC Parking Card, so it’s best to be prepared for all options.

And did you know that the city collects more than $500 million a year in parking fines? Since every minute counts, one Councilmember has introduced legislation to reinstate a five-minute grace period for people who violate meter and alternate-side parking rules. The Bloomberg administration is not in favour of the bill, saying it will increase congestion when drivers are looking for street parking and it will delay street cleaners.

Thanks to Gridlock Sam, former Deputy Commissioner of NYC DOT, and his Traffic Conundrums book for the hint about using Muni-Meter receipts.

East River Tolls Update
We seem to be closer to having tolls on the Harlem and East River bridges. Recent meetings on the MTA’s fiscal crisis ended with key NYS Democrats not supporting Ravitch’s proposal to put a per $5 toll on the East River bridges and a $2 toll on the Harlem River bridges. The Democrats are pretty much in charge.

But then Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver agreed to a lower charge of $2 per crossing on all the free bridges, or an amount equal to whatever straphangers pay.

Stay tuned.
