Fantastic Thanksgiving Parking Deals

Greetings!

I know, you probably have visions of paying $50 to park for the Thanksgiving Day Parade or are anticipating the reactions from your out-of-town relatives when they see the rates, right?

Great news. You won’t have to pay anywhere near that amount and neither will your guests.

First, we suggest you look for street parking, which is FREE on Thanksgiving Day. But if you do want to park in a garage, here’s our advice.

Thanksgiving Day Parade Parking

The parade runs from 77th Street down Central Park West, then down Broadway to end at 34th Street. The floats get going around 9am and finish around noon. For the convenience of parking near Central Park West in the 80s, expect to pay $40 - $50. You can pay about $30 - $40 between 60th and 75th Streets, or just $25 at MPG on the South side of 90th b/n Amsterdam and Columbus

To really save on parking:
Pay $10 - $15 with all the Early Bird Special rates that are available until 9 or 10am. Midtown garages will be craving business since offices will be closed.
Pay $13+ on the East Side and take a brisk family walk through Central Park. Most of these garages don’t have an Event or Holiday rate for Thanksgiving.
Pay $14 at Park It on the North side of 26th b/n 10th and 11th

Thanksgiving Eve to Watch the Parade Balloons Get Inflated

This is a great event, if you haven’t seen it before. According to Pam Skillings and about.com, the larger than life balloons are blown up starting around 4pm on Thanksgiving Eve on 77th & 81st Streets between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue. Regular attendees recommend getting there around 5pm and the event ends at 8pm. Most of the nearby garages are going to charge upwards of $30, so go farther West and find an evening special rate that starts after 5pm. Click here to see a few great ones we found. Parking at a Broken Meter

Did you know that you are allowed to park at a broken meter for only one hour, even if the meter is for 2 or 4 hours? This rule isn’t ever posted and most people find it out when they go to fight the ticket in court. Mayor Bloomberg is about to sign a Bill so that you can park at a broken meter for as long as the meter would allow when it’s working. The changes will take effect 90 days after the Bill is signed.
