5th Annual Small Business Day at the State House
January 27, 2010, 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Holiday Inn, Concord

The NH SBDC, the NH BIA, and local and regional chambers will host the 5th Annual Small Business Day at the State House to bring small business owners face to face with state leaders for public policy discussion and debate.

 

There will be three panels:

 

I. A panel discussion with the state's elected leaders, followed by a Q&A, begins the morning.  The state leadership panel includes Senate President Sylvia Larsen, House Speaker Terie Norelli, Senate Republican Leader Peter Bragdon and House Republican Leader Sherm Packard, and will focus specifically on top small business issues of 2010 and how state elected leaders seek to resolve them.

 

II. Taxing Distributions from LLCs

will focus on New Hampshire's extension of the 5% interest and dividends tax to distributions from LLC's and partnerships. 

 

III. Recovery to Growth:  Where are the Opportunities? Discover new strategies and opportunities in three areas: Improving Your Bottom Line, Doing Business with the Government, and Effective Marketing on a Small Business Budget.  Participants include Rudy Bazelmans, Expense Reduction Analysts; Rachael Roderick, US Small Business Administration; David Pease, NH Procurement Technical Assistance Program; and Sara Adams, ska works.  Moderated by Mary Collins, State Director, NH SBDC.

New Hampshire Start-up Challenge 2010
The New Hampshire Start-up Challenge is a business plan competition created to connect entrepreneurs and social innovators with seed capital and key services to help them on their path toward the creation of value, sustainable growth, and profitability. Applicants who are chosen to participate in the Challenge will receive scholarships to the Stonyfield Farm Entrepreneurial Institute and other guidance on important aspects of their business plans, and plenty of support as they prepare for their launch. Ultimately, one winner will be chosen to receive a $25,000 cash award and in-kind professional services and products from New Hampshire-area businesses. Applications are due by January 31st!
 
SBA, Dell Launch New Educational Video Series to Help Small Businesses Grow, Create Jobs.
Strategies for Growth: Advice for Expanding Your Business includes real-world insight, solutions and advice from small business owners who've succeeded, in good and bad economic times.  Additionally, the series draws on the expertise of counselors, policy makers and others for accessing resources and tools available to small business owners.
 
Over $3M Available Through New Energy Reduction Fund
CDFA and its partners, the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund and the Jordan Institute, were awarded $3.5 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding through the New Hampshire Office of Energy and Planning, to capitalize a revolving loan fund, the Energy Reduction Fund. The Fund will help finance energy improvements in buildings owned by micro, small, medium, and large commercial businesses and nonprofit organizations.
 
The tax filing season is just around the corner, so if you haven't already done so, it's time to organize your records.  Whether you are a business owner or an individual taxpayer, you can avoid headaches at tax time with good records because they will help you remember transactions you made during the year. Keeping well-organized records also ensures you can answer questions if your return is selected for examination or prepare a response if you are billed for additional tax. This workshop is for people who are interested in learning the fundamentals of starting and running a business the right way.  Some subjects covered are the pros and cons of being in business, registering your business, choosing the business form (LLC, sole proprietor, etc.), basics of accounting and record keeping, understanding your market, basic business law, cash flow planning and budgeting, and how financing really works.

ABI's January "Ask-the-Expert" - A New Year...A New Business?

Presented by the NH Manufacturing Extension Partnership, the NH International Trade Resource Center, and the U.S. Commercial Service, the ExporTech program helps companies to enter or expand in global markets, by assisting in the development of a customized international growth plan, vetted by experts, and by building a team of organizations that helps companies move quickly beyond planning to actual export sales. The ExporTech program leads companies through a facilitiated process that prepares them for a profitable growth in global markets.
