The Art AND Science of Starting a Business
| Is entrepreneurship an art or a science? Are entrepreneurs made or born? Why do we allow these discussions to become an either/or?
There is nothing black and white about starting a business and there is nothing easy about starting a business. When faced with this list of 9 important things start-ups should remember, Rob Parisi (who just joined our Business Incubator Program) replied, "Why does it feel like 99 elements when you are doing it?"
Starting a business is a mix of art & science, plus hard work & discernment. It is finding the time and space to make intelligent decisions and it also involves a good deal of luck.
Starting a business is a terrific act of creation, and I think these quotes on creativity capture the essence of business start-ups very nicely:

Hannah Grimes Center Announces New Program Coordinator

The Hannah Grimes Center announced that Jillian Garcia, a 2010 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, has been named Program Coordinator. Garcia is responsible for managing all aspects of Hannah Grimes' numerous workshops, seminars and educational programs in support of the development of entrepreneurs and community builders throughout the Monadnock region. Is Entrepreneurship Art Or Science?

I have heard and participated in this debate for as long I've been involved in entrepreneurship. I have friends and colleagues who will argue until they're "blue in the face" that entrepreneurship is either art or science. In an effort to answer this question, if you observe entrepreneurs and particularly those who have been successful, you quickly realize that there is no "right" answer. Sometimes entrepreneurship looks more like art, sometimes more like science, and sometimes, it looks like an equal mix of the two.
Business Potential: Do You Have What it Takes? Most of us receive more training about how to drive a car than start a small business. A high percentage of people who start businesses do so because they have a gift or talent they want to see manifest in the world. Or, they love the idea of self employment - not because they have a burning passion for business for business sake. So, how do you being honestly evaluating whether you're ready to start new business?
Here's my top 10 questions to ask yourself to best assess your readiness.
Move Forward as an Entrepreneur
A new business is so exciting - the world is filled with possibilities when the venture is about to begin. The essence of that excitement has to be captured and held as precious, for going forward, there will be pitfalls and traps that may make you want to doubt yourself.
Moving from an Idea to a Business Plan can sound like a daunting prospect, so I like to introduce my entrepreneurs to the Timmons Model for Entrepreneurship. It ties together the things that you need to consider and can make the world of business seem very accessible.
