Nonprofits Mean Business
|
At Hannah Grimes we work to build strong collaborations among a diverse mix of businesses, nonprofits included. From apples to aerospace to after-school programs - we know these improbable collaborations are the key ingredient for strong and innovative businesses and communities in an increasingly complex and quickly changing world.
Nonprofits employ 15% of the NH workforce. Nonprofits are businesses that have been granted a special tax status by the IRS because they provide a public benefit and profits support the mission (and are not distributed back). They provide jobs, require a solid business model, purchase goods, rent and own property, and provide good and services. They provide vital support and direct contributions to a thriving local economy and vibrant community.
This issue of the HGT has several articles on the impact of the nonprofit sector, we hope you learn something from them that helps your business.
Did you know that more people work in the nonprofit sector than the finance, insurance and real estate sectors combined? That it provides 5.5% of the US GDP? That there are 8,401 nonprofits in NH - with 80% of them operating with budgets under $100,000? That business relies on the nonprofit sector for support on everything from improving bottom-line performance to going green to injecting creativity into their workforce?
Did you know that Hannah Grimes has a Nonprofit Center that offers very affordable office space to nonprofits and that we offer services to this important sector of our economy through our Giving Monadnock Program?
To all of you who actively support the nonprofit sector, thank you &
keep up the good work,
MAK

What We're Reading: Anything You Want
By Derek Sivers
|
This short book condenses Derek Sivers' lessons learned over the ten years of starting and growing his business, CD Baby.
"I started CD Baby focused on the importance of making a dream-come-true perfect world for musicians. Along the way I learned the importance of making my business a dream come true for myself, too. Business is as creative as the fine arts. You can be as unconventional, unique, and quirky as you want. A business is a reflection of the creator."
Feel free to email us a paragraph or two about What You're Reading.

Raising Awareness

The Sector's Economic Impact
Though many people are not aware of it, the nonprofit community is an enormous contributor to the American economy: It provides 5.5 percent of the nation's entire GDP or $751 billion worth of output.
In 2009, nonprofits employed 13.5 million individuals, or approximately 10 percent of the country's workforce. To provide a comparison, more people work in the sector than in the finance industry, including insurance and real estate, combined. In addition, in 2009 volunteer activity of 8.1 billion hours of service produced an estimated value of $169 billion.

NH's Diverse Nonprofit Sector
The number of registered nonprofits reflects the scope of the work being accomplished and the diversity of each organization's purpose. Of the 8,401 nonprofits in our state, the largest segment of the nonprofit sector - a total of 6,716 nonprofits - are comprised of small, community-based organizations. All have budgets under $100,000. The remaining 1,685 nonprofits serving New Hampshire address more complex service needs, require specific expertise in their staffs and carry more varied funding portfolios.
Green Business Trend: Turning to Nonprofits for Help
Becoming an environmentally responsible business isn't an overnight process. It can take weeks of research and data analysis to make wise decisions that help both the environment and the bottom line - time many business owners don't have to spare.
