Exploring Our
Local Living Economy
|
What has the Monadnock Local Living Economy Project accomplished since starting close to two years ago? Our work may be hard to see--but like mushrooms, with seemingly invisible mycelium working underground, progress continues.
This year, we turned our focus to strategic planning. Instead of offering separate events (like the events at Keene State College and Antioch University New England), we instilled the local living economy message into Hannah Grimes Center's current activities--by bringing relevant speakers to our annual CONNECT Event and highlighting local living economy events in this monthly e-newsletter. We also became proud members of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) and attended their annual conference, Place Matters.
What's next? Keene State College's American Studies Program recently received an American Studies Association Community Partnership Grant to fund two Local Living Economy student internships during the fall semester. These interns will work with Hannah Grimes to analyze the Center's current approach to local and regional economic issues and make recommendations for future activities.
To stay informed, connect with the Monadnock Local Living Economy Project's Blog and Facebook Fanpage. If you'd like to get involved or find others ways to support this project, please contact jen@hannahgrimes.com-- and be sure to join us at CONNECT 2011.

- Measure What Matters
Read more about BALLE's guiding principles.
How does the Monadnock Region define a local living economy?
The Competitiveness of Local Living Economies In fact, local goods and services are already competing remarkably well in the marketplace-and they are likely to do better in the near future. This chapter lays out why cost effectiveness actually is a reason to embrace localization and argues that the only thing standing in the way of localization flourishing is, oddly, policy-makers committed to propping up increasingly noncompetitive global corporations.
Raising Money on Main Street With the economy heading into a tailspin, the chances of securing funding through traditional channels seemed impossible. The partners had a brainstorm: Perhaps area residents would give them a loan. Read more Local Living Economy News
