Esterilsol™ Behavior Study in Chile |
| A report from the field |
Earlier this year, ACC&D's Karen Green visited and participated in a Veterinarians Without Borders/Veterinarios Sin Fronteras - Canada (VWB/VSF) project in Chile, which ACC&D is also helping support financially. This project will compare behavior changes in male dogs that are castrated with those sterilized with Esterilsol, the non-surgical sterilant.

| Contraceptive vaccine registered for horses in the U.S. |
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has officially registered a contraceptive vaccine for horses. ZonaStat-H, a porcine zona pellucida (PZP) vaccine, has been used in trials to contracept over 1,600 horses, including wild horses as well as horses living on tribal lands and in sanctuaries. The registration is being celebrated by both wildlife and animal welfare agencies, and is the result of years of collaboration among stakeholders, key among them the Science and Conservation Center and the Humane Society of the United States. Ovary-sparing Spay |
An alternative surgical sterilization method for bitches
|
ACC&D is focused on advancing non-surgical methods of fertility contr ol. However, we know many in our audience may also be interested in other alternatives to traditional "spay" (ovariohysterectomy") and "neuter" (castration) surgeries. The Parsemus Foundation (a supporter of and friend to ACC&D) now provides information on their website about "ovary-sparing spay" (removing the uterus and leaving the ovaries intact). Separately, Parsemus is initiating discussion on ovariectomy (removing only the ovaries, leaving the uterus in place). You can find more information on ovary-sparing spay here and ovariectomy here.
