One thing we're especially pleased to tell you about today is the new cat population modeling project we're kicking off with the support of a generous grant from the ASPCA®!

ASPCA® Grant Funds ACC&D Feral/Free-roaming Cat Population Model | | ACC&D moving forward on next steps after Population Dynamics Think Tank | ACC&D is expanding a project to better understand and plan dog and cat population control programs, thanks to a $45,000 grant from the ASPCA. The project will engage experts to develop a computer simulation model of feral and free-roaming cat populations based on available data on dynamics of these populations. Once complete, the model will allow those planning and conducting population control programs to use the software to look at their program and better understand how many cats they need to sterilize, how often interventions need to be conducted, what portions of the population would be best for targeting (for instance, juvenile queens versus mature queens), and what changes in the population they can expect over time...

Multi-year Cat Contraceptive | | Results published on five-year GonaCon™ study | The journal Theriogenology has published the results of a five year study by Dr. Julie Levy on GonaCon, an immunocontraceptive vaccine. control of white-tailed deer populations, but the vaccine has been shown to work in other species as well, including cats. Levy's study followed fifteen cats for five years. After a single treatment with the vaccine, 93% of cats remained infertile for one year, 73% remained infertile for two years, 53% remained infertile for three years, and 40% remained infertile for four years.

ACC&D has followed GonaCon with interest for several years, and has been in contact with the drug's creators and with Dr. Levy (who is also a member of our Scientific Advisory Board). Although there are some drawbacks to use of GonaCon in cats, and some questions that still need to be answered, we are looking into the potential for use of this contraceptive vaccine in feral cat populations.
